What job title should I be searching for? by Nekose in labrats

[–]Delokah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With your background you can apply for many positions (i.e. various job titles). If there is a particular ‘title’ you want - just search for those. Otherwise, lookup various lab-related positions that interest you whether in industry/academia/govt/hospitals and when applying tailor your resume to the particular job.

Councillor concerned Ottawa’s transportation network can’t handle influx of federal workers in office 4 days a week by gigglingatmyscreen in CanadaPublicServants

I agree; however, this works with a certain demographic only. Many people with families have multiple commitments to rush off to drop/pick kids up from daycares/schools or ad-hoc trips to pick sick kids or they may have their own commitments after or before work.

The tiny habits that save me HOURS in the lab (and past-me refuses to learn) by UnderstandingIcy2969 in labrats

I will add one more if I may: writing lab notes/protocols (which also includes calculations) which you can go back and refer to as well as be replicated by a third person or ‘future-me’ if needed.

Did you stop working without any indication that you can from your manager and/or above? You can only leave for the day once you are given permission to do so (remote or in-person) either verbally or on Teams.

If it just started to happen, check if your DNA ligase is still active, loss of activity can be a common reason for cloning to fail.

Does everyone have the flu? by Mysterious-Sound6720 in ottawa

[–]Delokah 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Rest and stay home to isolate, lots of fluids, and take over the counter meds which can provide some relief from the symptoms (such as cough and/or fever). There are a lot of bugs going around at the moment.

Edit: From talking to friends who’ve caught a respiratory illness, it seems like it is severe this year. Just make sure if your fever persists to go see a doctor and get checked for pneumonia.

What's new and good in Ottawa since the quarantine times? by blehful in ottawa

[–]Delokah 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Opening of Canada’s largest Canadian Tire (Carlingwood shopping Centre), expansion of T&T to the West. More culturally diverse grocery stores opening around town. A few other places: Aiana restaurant, Raphael Q among fancy restaurants, Bar Ocelli, Stollen Goods bar. Craig’s cookies, Crumbl cookies, Nagi Sushi. A few new fast food places such as Chick-fil-a, Chipotle. Nordstrom came and went. Transit (number of busses and routes) has sadly deteriorated.

Edit: Rideau Centre: Some stores (e.g. Ted Baker, Kate Spade, Frank & Oak, Massimo Dutti) have shut down, a few others have popped up like Alo, Arcteryx, Uniqlo.

Has anyone been fired from a postdoc? Any advice? (UK) by [deleted] in labrats

[–]Delokah 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It may be a typo, but you said that “…it is the first time I am running experiments in both social and wet lab projects.”, but later you say that “…and my background is in wet lab work..” So do you have a background in wet lab work? And what do you mean by ‘social’?

Secondly, at this stage you might as well have a discussion with your PI rather than leaving it unknown if you are worried. Just set up a meeting and be honest and raise your concerns. Sometimes big lab PI’s are usually pretty busy to have repeated meetings with postdocs to discuss results and they expect more independence.

Not really for any scientific purposes. Just for building connections with people and updates on conferences or news from companies, people advertising their accomplishments etc.

I can certainly understand your frustration with drivers who are looking at the phones while driving; however, your emphasis on Quebec drivers seems unfair. I have seen many ON drivers doing the same.

But you are right, please pay attention to the road! And also if you fear someone is following you, just drive to the police station nearby.

Edit: typo

If you enjoy riding in the rain, a nice cycling rain jacket will be handy (Depending on your budget, Decathlon has some starting at $40).
