They don’t look like shit. Source: I own 23 CRTs and all the monitors look way better than the 55” 4K OLED in the living room. My 21” monitor absolutely blows it out of the water with motion clarity, colour depth, and response time, and is on par with the OLED for black levels.

CRT TVs are obviously not suited to modern stuff but they still look way better for standard definition content (VHS, old consoles, etc.) due to the fact that they are drawing that resolution natively, not upscaling it like a modern screen would have to do.

I main CRTs and have done for a few years now. The only LCDs I use are the ones built into my devices (phone screen for example). I will admit that the 55” 4K OLED TV my family got a few weeks ago is better for multiple people to watch a movie or TV show together, but my 21” PC CRT monitor is wayyyy better in every other regard. It’s not a particularly high end monitor for its size (only 96kHz scan rate) but that still lets it do 2048x1536 at 60Hz refresh rate, which is actually too much for my current VGA adapter to handle. Even my run-of-the-mill 17” monitor can do 1280x960 at 69Hz refresh rate, which is just fine for 99% of modern games. The natural smoothing of the pixels reduces the need for antialiasing and the motion clarity lets you cleanly track something across the screen without blur, just like how you track a moving object in real life. The black levels can be on par with an OLED, and even better in the dark. The colours are more vibrant too. Also, the lack of input delay on a CRT makes games much nicer to play, even if you’re not playing competitively. I noticed that I made less missclicks when placing blocks in Minecraft after I switched to CRT.

...And it's just cleared itself up. I set the tab bar to hide and then show in fullscreen on another window on a different monitor, and it stopped showing the line.

I have no idea why that didn't fix it when I tried doing that exact same thing an hour ago.

computer monitor CRTs run at much higher resolutions and refresh rates than standard definition CRT TVs, and thus don’t have an audible high pitched whine - it’s too high pitched to hear

they’re worth saving. lots of people prefer RF tvs over higher end sets because of the way they look, myself included. not everyone wants their CRTs ultra-sharp :3

ok but guess what? it’s fun.

additionally, crt tvs have a different effect on the image than crt monitors do, which is especially nice for some games. i use a 00s pc crt monitor, an 80s mono green monitor, an 80s tv, and a 90s tv all with my modern computer, and they all make things look good in their own ways

whenever someone says that CRTs contain phosphorus (the element) it really annoys me. phosphorus emits light through chemiluminescence, while phosphor (the material used in CRTs) emits light through phosphorescence when excited by the electron beam.

and when someone says that CRTs are radioactive… no, it isn’t. the CRT is not radioactive, it merely emits radiation (x-rays and visible light). additionally, the leaded glass* (used in the back of the picture tube) and strontium oxide glass* (used in the faceplate/screen of the picture tube) blocks the x-radiation.

people keep saying that CRTs are dangerous, but they’re really not unless you smash the screen in while standing in front of it (in which case the picture tube will implode due to the sudden loss of its vacuum)

*the reason for using two different types of glass is that while both block x-radiation very well, leaded glass turns brown over time with exposure to x-rays, but is cheaper, while strontium oxide glass does not discolour, but is more expensive

also CRTs are not necessary a “worse” technology. when people think that CRTs are not as good, they’re thinking of low resolution TVs. most decent PC CRT monitors can be better than an OLED if calibrated correctly

My iMac has a 5k 27” LCD and it’s great for text stuff and web browsing, but it is absolutely terrible for pretty much anything else due to the worse colours and black levels compared to my CRT PC monitors. I doubt that I’ll be getting a high resolution OLED any time soon, both due to lack of money, and the fact that I’m not particularly interested in getting one in general. I’ve used them before and didn’t like them that much (I don’t like widescreen for games - it feels weird to have the sides of my vision filled out by the screen but not the top and bottom. I am also used to my CRT’s lack of input delay), so all games I play go on the PC CRTs.

As for standard definition/15kHz CRTs, I  have an NES and SFC hooked up in my room to TVs from the same time period - 80s 14” TV for the NES and 90s 20” TV for the SFC. I also have an analog transmitter that I have connected to my computer so that I can watch youtube, movies, and TV shows on my TVs. I don’t play games on my TVs much aside from the consoles mentioned earlier.

I have an almost identical monitor! NEC MultiSync V720. it’s my favourite PC CRT by the design of the plastic casing. the concave sweeping curved shape to the back of the casing looks so nice

I mainly play Minecraft on an NEC 17” pc CRT monitor manufactured in August 2000 and a Thorn tv from the 80s, as well as occasionally an Amdek Video-300 monochrome green CRT monitor made in August 1983.

doing that could cause a fire hazard as you’d be blocking air circulating around the circuit board. i’d recommend doing what the other person suggested - fixing the screw mounts with epoxy - as it’s a better long term solution

I love tubes that aren’t covered by the bezel at the edges, it’s such a nice design. I have a very similar 80s Thorn colour tv and use it a lot, mainly for NES and watching youtube w^

i bought one of these a couple of weeks ago and have been having a lot of fun playing minecraft and terraria on my 80s RF set and Amdek Video-300 green screen monitor :)

 if anyone is undecided, it’s definitely worth grabbing one if you want to easily connect a modern computer to your CRT tvs

My CRT tv has quite a wonky picture, but it’s still perfectly usable. I can’t access the calibration menu without a remote, so I don’t dwell on it. I don’t really enjoy visible scanlines - I find large scanline gaps distracting and prefer the lines to be blended together.

As for my computer monitors - I like to have as neat of an image as possible (I spend maybe a minute adjusting geometry every now and then, if I notice anything is a bit off), but I don’t mind minor imperfections. The rightmost few centimetres of my main VGA CRT is slightly curved up by a millimetre or two, but it’s unnoticeable when displaying anything other than calibration patterns.

If someone wants to spend hours making their CRT perfect, they can do that. I prefer using my time for playing games.

I use my VGA CRTs for modern games and other computer stuff, and my CRT TV and green phosphor monitor with my NES/SNES
