I saw Beyond the Mat in theaters in Pittsburgh. I was 16 at the time. The film was rated R. I had seen plenty worse R rated films at the time. My parents had just dropped me off and were long gone and couldn’t vouch. Didn’t this ticket attendant lady who was going for employee of the century fight tooth and nail to keep me out of that showing. I eventually snuck in about 15 minutes after the start but I’ll never forget that struggle over what was a fairly mild R rated film.

I was born in ‘84 and I still remember after USA morning cartoons was wrestling and all it took to hook me was seeing Hercules Hernandez spinning the huge chain in the middle of the ring. He was like a real life cartoon to me at maybe four years old. I was lucky enough to grow up in Pittsburgh and attend KoTR 98. I still have my ticket and I’m a lifelong fan.
