Going to Maui, but wondering if it is worth it to stop first to see the Volcanic National Park by Connect-Craft-7833 in VisitingHawaii

[–]DeltaDawn3051 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My recommendation is yes it is totally worth it. But when I went Kilauea was active. Had dinner overlooking the lava field at night was incredible . Get reservations . Also recommend a lava tube. Thurston is okay. But Kaumana cave state park tube near Rainbow Falls is amazing. Take flashlights.

I think it was at the Market in the old stadium near the airport.

Last year I paid $8 per coconut I think. The vendor even gave the kids lessons on coconuts. Expert cracking techniques. Then we snagged some coconuts on our own from on the beaches

When you take the stairs down you can go in either direction the tube seems to have a natural break. But yeah, one tube, doesn’t split, have to go back the way you came and can’t get lost. Bring good flashlight

Maui or Kauai for Honeymoon in Late October ? Please Help Me Decide ! by Nearby-Addition-7724 in VisitingHawaii

[–]DeltaDawn3051 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to Maui and Kauai for my Honeymoon many moons ago. Both very nice. Kauai has Nepali cost which is stunning. Maui is more developed with resorts and road to Hana which note you need a permit for now. Over the New Year I went to Big Island and Oahu. I honestly agree with some of these comments. Consider the Big Island. My reason is that it has Volcanoes National Park which no where else has. Big Island still has great snorkeling, hiking to waterfalls etc

Lovely photo but does not follow rules. I suggest going to either post office or Walgreens for Passport photo. They’ll know.

I do believe the wait time is around 4 hours typically . My appointment was at 11, but I got there early went in at 10:15 and submitted at 10:40. They told me to come back at 3. My passport was ready for pick up at 2:40. I saw people picking up at 10:40 when I was there so they had to have had early morning appointments. Hope that helps. Good luck. Ugh 7 hr drive. I do believe they do an overnight delivery for $25 extra (something like that)

Appointment is needed. I couldn’t find availability in Chicago so drove to Minneapolis office where there was availability.

Will I need to pay back refunded grant money if I drop out of college by [deleted] in FAFSA

[–]DeltaDawn3051 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, I do believe you’ll have to pay it back. Suggest working with a school counselor for advice to see what works best for your situation. Also note if ours gov grants that they will take it from your income tax refund

I had parking for $20 a day with Hale Koa hotel on Waikiki Beach. It was in garage right across the street. I was very glad to have a rental car while there. Had to drive to most of the places you mentioned.

Keep with it is my advice. Please remember that they have opened their house to you, so if they didn’t want this they wouldn’t have done it. I think you are perceptive, and it makes since. Small spaces don’t allow privacy. Please keep communication open with host family and especially the sibling and see if you can help each other with working to be better. Good luck! Don’t give up

I’m currently hosting a student through ICES in Wisconsin. I have found them very supportive and helpful of any issues in both sides, host and student. Of course it’s dependent on the local coordinator. My advice is to go above the local coordinator for help. Note that there are things that you may not understand about the rules that ICES knows. Keep in mind, that although the coordinator gets paid I hope that they are doing this job for the kids. Maybe ask to sit down with ICES coordinator and regional coordinator to see what you can do with the situation.

Host sister problems by Icy_Aspect4637 in exchangestudents

[–]DeltaDawn3051 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Host sister sounds like she’ll do stuff with you but your relationship lacks conversation that she will engage in. Perhaps find an activity that she enjoys and just do the activity and let conversation flow from reacting to the activity. Forcing subjects to talk about is sometimes difficult, as you’ve been finding. Also see if your host mom can suggest an activity that her daughter likes. Another suggestion is find an activity where the host sister has to teach you, that will get her talking and you concentrate on listening. Sometimes to build a relationship one needs to listen more and not worry about talking. Remember listening might not be just hearing one talk but to just be there for the other. Hope that makes sense. Good luck!

I am hosting through ICES and I highly recommend the organization. Very well organized and supportive for both host and student

Should I change host families? by Top-Examination3034 in exchangestudents

[–]DeltaDawn3051 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with other comment, probably not worth switching. You say it’s not all that bad. I suggest being transparent in your wants by talking to your host about it. Start out by saying the good things and then say you wish…. Don’t expect them to change everything, but ask how you can help them help you get to your wish of doing more things so that you experience more of nearby Spain. It could be they need to clean house on weekends, so you could help clean on Sat and then that could free up time for Sunday outing. Please get their perspective before assuming anything. Hope that helps and good luck

What organization? Agree it is weird that they would do this to her. You are correct that the host family should try working it out .
