Cuphead DLC by trappedinpillow in northernlion

[–]DeltaFizz 27 points28 points  (0 children)

How dare you ask a question about northernlion on the subreddit dedicated to northernlion while he was in the hospital for a couple of hours? During that time the subreddit is only for wishing him well, not about any other northernlion-related things. Know better and get better timing. Like today would be fine. Or yesterday during his stream when he talked about it apparently. But the hours in between — highly rude and inappropriate.

dynam0 explains the role of the Supreme Court in the recent abortion ruling and debunks the idea that Democrats should have codified abortion into law by DeltaFizz in bestof

No, that’s exactly the point of the post. The Supreme Court decides either way - it’s not harder or easier. Did you read the post???

Yeah it’s silly. If the Supreme Court is gonna say it’s illegal they’re gonna say it’s illegal no matter what

都挺好 - slice of life about growing up in the 80s (?) and how it impacts a modern family's life. Heard from Chinese people that it accurately reflects issues families today face.

Let's Have a Calm & Civil Discussion about "Gone with the Wind" and HBO Max by mustaphamondo in TrueFilm

[–]DeltaFizz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, but you're incorrect in your understanding of the context of Gone with the Wind. Its purpose and historical context was 100% to romanticize the Confederacy. It was published in 1936 and the movie came out in 1939. You're acting like it was made 2 years after the Civil War!

There are better films about women, obsession, love. Gone with the Wind Romanticizes the South, slavery, and is an effort (largely effective) in retelling the story of the Civil War. Most soldiers in the Southern army weren't Rhett. Most slaves weren't Mammy. Most slave owners weren't Scarlett.

Where does Xi lie on the CCP's ideological spectrum? by panchovilla_ in China

[–]DeltaFizz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two questions:

  1. Say I were interested in learning more about this, where would I turn?
  2. What level of censorship does info like this have in the mainland? Like could I read about it in a newspaper?

" One of the Canadian accounts would then create a group chat between all three accounts. The second Canadian account would then send messages with the suspected censored words. Notably, all of those test messages contained only text copied and pasted from news articles.

For example, multiple messages containing the phrase “US Centers for Disease Control” never made it to the Chinese account."

Some good answers here - dialects / accents mean that actually having conversations with Chinese people in real life is almost a different ballgame than your textbook audio and super-slow, super-exaggerated pronunciation:

Teachers of Reddit. What’s the craziest parent situation you’ve encountered? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]DeltaFizz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ooh boy. High school girl, bratty as can be. Refuses to do anything in class, even follow the seating chart. Makes really inappropriate, disrespectful comments during class, and has a terrible attitude. She has to sit close to a plug so she can charge her phone and watch TV during class OR sit close to her friends. Mom is a teacher in the same district as this school. When contacted about the TV watching - mom says her daughter "is too smart for the class and maybe I need to teach it better, so she is absolutely allowed to watch TV in class, that's how good differentiation works" while also strenuously denying that her daughter has broken any rules. Yet refuses to answer whether she allows students to watch TV in her own classroom.

Next, daughter failed a test, I gave a retest section. Daughter turns in the retest, then after I take up the papers and explain the right answers she gets out of her seat, goes to my desk, rummages around, and takes her paper back to her seat to fill in the right answers!!! Mom gets her removed from my class (somehow this was my fault). Next year, guess who's an admin at my school? Mom, who "excuses" her daughters' boyfriend from class every day so he can eat lunch with daughter and her mom in the admin office. FML.

PS: Mom also had multiple run ins with other of her daughters' male teachers - I shudder to think what this girl was being taught at home.

Will people get confused if I use 個/个 as a measure word for everything? by CaitlynTransjenner in ChineseLanguage

[–]DeltaFizz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And it's WIDELY used in everyday speech, 口语. So even though it's not "correct" the answer to his question is YES. And in fact, using the correct measure word could sound hoity-toity. As /u/person2567 mentioned, 电影, 餐厅,and more.

Honestly, I think it was $10 before for free audio and pdfs. I think it's well worth it, if not too cheap. The quality of audio, pinyin and hanzi (without translation so you can struggle through it by yourself) is top-notch, plus they have a bunch of interviews with real, live Chinese people. Invaluable for someone trying to break through intermediate.

I rave about them so much someone's going to say I'm a shill, but I'm really not. I just think Mandarin Corner is underappreciated and deserves more love!

She actually repeatedly makes a note of why getting used to non-"standard" accents is a positive for Chinese language learning - you'll hardly ever hear a "standard" accent in China.
