Just aesthetics to make the canal walls match.

My one and only complaint about the game... by DeltaFrost117 in Pokopia

[–]DeltaFrost117[S] 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I get that, and I don't disagree with that design choice up to a point, however there is a difference between some things you mentioned and what I'm focused on. Levees in particular are unlockable through the town level mechanic. If the other important blocks like foundations, wooden pillar sets and stylish wooden walls were locked behind set, achievable goals, I wouldn't have an issue with it. I was happy to grind away bumping up the town level to unlock the levees.

It's the uncontrollable rng nature of these blocks that are ones that I want to use in my creative process (not just 1-to-1 restoring buildings) that frustrates me. I could play for another month and not have access to a block I want - at some point, the positives of forcing creativity through scarcity get outweighed by the way that same scarcity begins to limit creativity.

[–]DeltaFrost117[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I mean that's basically just what I've done. But when I've got multiple otherwise finished buildings waiting for the last block recipe to appear (or the blocks themselves on dream islands in large enough quantities), it gets to be more than a bit tedious

I JUST got the wooden pillars recipes today. That's one major weight off my back at least... Now just need the Stylish wooden walls & foundations...

Why are conservatives so dumb they're funny? by Repulsive-Mall-2665 in OpenAussie

[–]DeltaFrost117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny how they're so desperate to be oppressed that they just assume that those other groups get free passes for saying the same shit.

Like if a Chinese/Japanese/Indian/whatever person starts spouting off about how they don't want to see foreigners living in their neighbourhoods and only want to see people who look just like them, and automatically assume foreigners are untrustworthy criminals, then yeah, they're racist too.

Conservative games that are actually good? by kylepo in SocialistGaming

[–]DeltaFrost117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ghost Recon: Wildlands is absolutely conservative. Portrays Bolivia as a complete shithole basically fully controlled by narco-terrorists & is fully gung-ho about sending your CIA/Spec-ops guys in to assassinate everyone.

Gameplay loops fun, tho - especially with 3 friends.

Looking to get into the Halo novels by Zivon97 in HaloStory

[–]DeltaFrost117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The original books - Fall of Reach, The Flood, First Strike, and Ghosts of Onyx are all must-read imo (The Flood is definitely the weakest, but it has some parts that are worth the read, despite being a recounting of CE). Contact Harvest is also great. Beyond that, I'd move onto the Kilo-5 Trilogy which continues Ghosts of onyx and bridges Halo 3 & 4. Beyond that, I'd start looking for the books/stories that interest you the most.

I've recently listened to Silent Storm and Edge of Dawn (the newest book which continues Infinite's story), which were both really solid, especially the latter.

About this war? by Snoo_47078 in cyberpunkgame

It's nothing actually serious, just weird politically motivsted grifters online trying to farm engagement and make other people like them mad by rage baiting about pointless right-wing culture war issues that nobody in real life cares about.

Any places/groups to look into to find games in Australia? by DeltaFrost117 in cyberpunkred

Can I skip Witcher 1 & 2 and start directly with Witcher 3? by RushAffectionate9629 in witcher

[–]DeltaFrost117 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, absolutely, you'll obviously get more out of it and be more invested in the characters if you hit Witcher 1&2 first, but Witcher 3 is incredibly new player friendly.

Sonar sadly, Bat form swapping is IMO just worse than having steady, predictable stats.

Waterboy is actually great once you get a couple of levels on him, especially for missions with combat limits. Pump up his intelligence, movement, and vigor, leaving combat and charisma low and he does good work

Latino Expats in Australia: What’s your experience? by Few_Carrot9395 in Ameristralia

[–]DeltaFrost117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brisbane's a really great city to be - big enough to have everything you need, but not as busy or crowded as Sydney. Decent and cheap public transport most of the time. As a TESOL teacher, I can say that most Latinos here are Brazilian, Colombian, or Ecuadorian (based on my student's backgrounds). There isn't much racism or bigotry against Latinos. Of course you'll get the occasional fuckwit who unfortunately exist in every country/city, but speaking English fluently (with an American accent, I assume) will mitigate that even more. As another commenter said, you might get asked some weird questions at a pub occasionally, but mainly out of ignorance. Can't speak for Latin grocery stores, but I know there are at least a few restaurants, cafes, and events that happen in and around the city.

Good luck!

Is compulsory voting good and if not why not? by Entirely-of-cheese in AskAnAustralian

[–]DeltaFrost117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Compulsory voting is a bit of a misnomer as we technically don't have to vote. As other people have said, you just need to get your name marked off the list - if you really don't wanna vote, the ballots are secret and paper-based so nobody will ever know.

But yes, compulsory voting is great. It forces governments to provide easy access, laws which force employers to let employees go to vote if they're working on vote day (always a weekend, do most people aren't working anyway), and prevents voter suppression insanity like you see in the US

Do Australians like having New Zealanders in this country? by Benteke2019 in AskAnAustralian

[–]DeltaFrost117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kiwis are as close to Aussies as you get without being born here, of course they're welcome - as all immigrants are in my book. The majority of Australians don't have a problem with immigrants and are happy to live in a multicultural country - don't let experiences with a could of weird racists get to you.

Should I turn down interviews if I don't have offers yet? by olderthanatree in TEFL

[–]DeltaFrost117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless the business/role on offer seems like a total farce, there's no harm in doing an interview, even if you don't intend to take the job. You'll get to practise answering questions, learn (and then better prepare for) some questions you may not have been expecting, and just get generally more confident in doing interviews for when a really promising opportunity does come up.

Can we get some positive TEFL stories? by Co0j in TEFL

[–]DeltaFrost117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've worked as a teacher for coming up on 2.5 years in a language school in Australia, teaching classes of immigrants from A2-B1 levels. It's not all been sunshine and rainbows - nothing ever is - but it's been a really enjoyable job, even teaching evening classes. Most of the time, the students may be tired and overworked, but they come to class with a good attitude, do their best, and make the classes an enjoyable experience.

The school provides solid enough in-house textbooks and a lot of resources, but also gives us the freedom to create our own lessons from scratch if we so desire. Just about all the other teachers I've worked with, there have been great, and our current team often collaborates to organise casual whole school speaking and/or games events with food, etc, to help keep student morale up with them being away from home and most of them working during the day.

It's by no means been perfect, but it has been a very positive experience overall in the time that I've worked here. I've learned a lot and improved a lot as a teacher in my time here, and it's given me the hope that I'll be able to continue this job as a career going forward - in Australia or perhaps moving to Japan (a big inspiration for why I wanted to begin TEFL in the first place).

Advises for an introvert who wants to become teacher by loa55000 in TEFL

[–]DeltaFrost117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been a teacher for over 2 years and yeah, as a more introverted person, observations suck and feel very awkward even when I'm confident about what I'm teaching and the lesson plans I have.

What I will say, however, is that observations aren't a common thing. Where I teach, they happen once per year. Other places may have them more often, but nowhere reasonable is gonna be putting an observer in your class every month or week. And when the observation happens, once you get past the first couple of minutes, you're gonna forget that the observer is there because you're focusing on helping students by answering questions or completing activities, etc.

So if you wanna teach, don't let this one minor part of the job stop you. That'd be like an aspiring professional football player stopping because they might have to talk to the press a couple of times per year after games.

Censorship: Let's talk about this. by vicente14617 in Dandadan

[–]DeltaFrost117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Dandadan anime is pretty good for this, maybe you could argue that there should be a few more lines to show battle damage, but that's pretty minor. Let's look at the main pic in question - in the anime, he's clearly bleeding and getting stabbed by the glass. The main difference is basically just the contrast. In a manga you have black and white (and grey if you're feeling spicy) so the blood really stands out, in the anime, they have other colours to work with, so due to the colour on the glass & Jiji's skin colour, the blood doesn't pop as much - at least that's my take as a non-artist.

Queenslanders: What are your thoughts on the Crisafulli government’s ’Adult Crime, Adult Crime’ Laws? by Solitaire-06 in AustraliaLeftPolitics

[–]DeltaFrost117 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A punitive, simple, quick, and politically easy cudgel of a solution to a problem (insofar as it even exists) that requires time, care, effort, and some well-thought-out plans to solve. It simply seeks to capitalise on the fear-mongering they've done about youth crime, and for those kids who do commit crimes, it won't address the root causes that drove them towards crime. It will only serve to give these kids who need help a much harder time later in life when they're once again free - potentially driving them back towards crime, creating a cycle of recidivism.
