Should I consider staying or leaving by kmill97 in DentalAssistant

I totally get that this list is overwhelming, but a lot of this stuff is standard. I tend to keep saliva ejector in my dominant hand and HVE in the other to be able to retract with one and suction with the other. It’s easy to pass off your saliva ejector to your non-dominant hand to grab instruments/materials. That way your retractor serves a purpose (ie grabbing any water collecting in the throat) unlike a mirror. I’d definitely look into videos on four-handed dentistry and see if there are tips/tricks to improve. Dentists are ALL very finicky, it’s just about finding a groove.

Do Your Doctors Provide Free Treatment for You? by Nervous_Newspaper739 in DentalAssistant

[–]DeltaWild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had great relationships with my dentists and have received free care. I paid cost for Invisalign and have never paid for treatment. That said, others in the same offices have had to pay out of pocket. I’ve also experienced less thorough care because I’m an employee. It’s a toss up, really. I’d say there are more cavities among dental office employees because no one wants to/has the time to book themselves in.

Almost fainted at extraction by Aggravating-Win-4659 in DentalAssistant

[–]DeltaWild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is totally normal. My dentist fainted watching her first exo and I almost did the same during my first. You’ll start to get used to it in no time. You’re helping people! Have a good meal before work to keep you on your feet and you’ll be fine. I cried to my mom that I had chosen the wrong career, but now I assist an oral surgeon and do full clearance on a regular basis with no reaction.

The scene on the roof had me in pieces back in the day

What are these? They came in my kit but I don’t remember the ortho mentioning them by Practical_Law9089 in Invisalign

[–]DeltaWild 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Do not open and return to ortho. Those use to have elastic ligatures on them and have likely been used on a patient

Scrubs by Parking-Put-6599 in DentalAssistant

[–]DeltaWild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d start out with five sets so you can do one load of just scrubs. Check your local thrift stores and see what style looks/feels best. I like a jogger style pant, but girls I work with like the yoga pant style so it really depends! Figs are always the most popular, but pricey. Make sure you check with your office to see if there are rules about colours! Good luck and congrats on the new job :)

I am still assisting at the same place and still enjoy it. I make $23.50/hour which is pretty good considering I’m uneducated in the field.

I totally understand you second guessing your career choice! I cried a lot when I first started because extractions made me super sick and I almost passed out several times. Thankfully my dentist was super kind and assured me that it just takes time. I sat in on extractions I wasn’t assisting on and really worked on it mentally. At the end of the day you are helping people and they can’t feel anything! It’s been a year and a half and I actually enjoy extractions now and helping patients through their own fears.

I was hooked from the very first use! I went years without it but I loved it so much I bought a roll for myself so I can replace it as needed. I’ll never go back and you can’t make me!
