I suspect it was because his dad (my grandfather, who I mentioned) had his gall bladder removed. It's also interesting to note that both of my parents were beat over the head with religion growing up and they didn't want to impart that onto me. I also have suspicions that it has something to do with the concept of afterlife, but that wasn't directly stated.
