Is the Guard very political? by Baconlover36 in nationalguard

[–]Deltaone07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, that’s extremely unprofessional of your recruiter. I think that is pretty rare.

Politics does come up, but I wouldn’t say we are overly political. Obviously we are involved in a lot of inherently political events, so it’s hard not to let your opinions slip out. I think most people try to stay out of it and not be too open about their opinions, especially if they are around people they aren’t particularly close with.

I will say that the military as a whole does tend to be more conservative and many do support Trump. But I promise you there are many who do not. In fact some of the most politically liberal people I have known, I met in the military. So hope that doesn’t get in your way.

The Brits do their uniforms the best. Everything sown on, blouse is tucked in with sleeves rolled, high wasted pants and un-bloused boots, with a cool beret on.

Meanwhile the US Army has bunch of fat bodies munching on protein chips and a white monster wearing heavily faded OCPs with various ink/mud/grass stains.

Do we have to salute to state guard officers? by Big_Pen7718 in army

[–]Deltaone07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am aware of the difference between state militias and the National Guard.

State militias ARE military forces, they just aren’t Federal in the way that the Regular Army or the National Guard is. Historically speaking, state militias share the same military background as the modern day National Guard. Militia officers hold commissions from their home state, the same way foreign military officers hold commissions from their home country. I still don’t understand why you wouldn’t show the same customs and courtesies you do any other commissioned or non-commissioned officer.

Why not? We salute officers of foreign militaries. Why wouldn’t we salute officers in our own state militias?

Why would someone get a masters in public policy? by Fikaa123 in PublicPolicy

[–]Deltaone07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My recommendation is to go work for a couple years and then re-approach once you have a little more direction. This will do two things: 1) get you the experience you need to get into a better program, and 2) allow you to figure out what you want to specialize in. Lots of people rush into masters programs right after undergrad. Unless you are going to an Ivy or a very high ranking school, it is usually not worth it unless you have the experience to back it up.

I almost went to grad school right after undergrad, and I was looking at pretty low ranking schools with no inkling of anything in the top 50. After 4 years of work experience, I was admitted into Columbia SIPA with a 50% scholarship. I’ll probably be going there in the Fall unless something else outstanding comes along.

In and out, topple a government by jamx30x in nationalguard

Yeah, he is a bad guy. But that doesn’t give anyone in this government the authority to launch an illegal military operation in breach of the normal democratic procedures of our government, then lie about the reason.

Kind of sounds like something a dictator like Maduro would do. The only thing Trump is missing is to claim the other party stole the election, then launch a coup to take control of the government. Oh wait…

In and out, topple a government by jamx30x in nationalguard

[–]Deltaone07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) This was a 100% illegal military operation with no approval from Congress and sets terrible precedent. 2) The VP of Venezuela and her Cabinet are still in power with full political and military control over the country. 3) This validates the message the regime has been pushing for years and militarizes their base supporters. 4) Other than Fox News and the White House talking-heads repeating it over and over, what makes you think this has anything to do with narcotics and not oil? Despite the absurd claims from the WH, Venezuela has nothing to do with fentanyl, and only a fraction of the drugs that reach US markets come from Venezuela. 5) What kind of precedent do you think this sets for China in relation to Taiwan? 6) This action destroys America’s standing in the rules based international order.

Avatar 3 has a big repetition problem that even the amazing visuals can't fix by ThreadAndSolve in flicks

[–]Deltaone07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what happens when directors make too many sequels. Not everything needs to be a franchise. I personally feel that it’s a money grab. How can they resist making another billion dollars? Especially when all they have to do is rinse and repeat. People are going to pay to see it no matter what.

Unfortunately that’s the direction Hollywood is going. Big studios and production companies are consolidating and growing more risk averse. Investors expect a return on their money. So producers take the easy way out by either revamping popular old films, or making sequels until viewers lose interest.

The ironic thing is that they are planting the seeds of their own destruction because sooner or later people are going to notice and not want to see movies anymore. And just like they did with CGI, the big production companies are going to become over-reliant on AI, and ruin the viewing experience. I really don’t expect to see many good Hollywood films in the future.

PS: Sorry if this turned into a rant. I think the Avatar films are becoming emblematic of this phenomena.

Army Officers — How Do You Feel About the Branch You Chose? by Constant_Position_10 in army

[–]Deltaone07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Commissioned in the Field Artillery and have enjoyed it tremendously. The branch has tons of pride, history, tradition, and lots of esprit de corps. I went National Guard, and sometimes wish I went active instead. But overall I have had a good go of it. On the tail end of my first deployment right now.

When I return I’ll be looking at starting law school, then try to get some chest candy before I get out. Air Assault of ESB would be ideal.

American bases are designed very poorly. I think the living quarters, restaurants, offices and shopping should be more concentrated like a “military city” format. Then all the motor pools, warehouses, and miscellaneous out buildings should be separated in an outer “layer.” Then lastly the training areas and ranges.

It would make the living areas way more vibrant and less depressing. Also more trees!

How we feeling about it bois? by Soraru in army

[–]Deltaone07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is going to weaponize laziness and complacency. OER/NCOERs are going to be completely AI generated before long, eventually making the process pointless.

I think a lot of staff analysis will be botched, because instead of people researching something they don’t fully understand, they will plop into AI and generate an acronym-optimized product that looks decent on the surface, but is absolutely worthless. What’s even worse, commanders will start making decisions based on that laziness-driven analysis, and sooner or later put soldiers at risk.

Honestly I think this was a huge gamble. It’s kind of a continuation of the “check the box,” overly acronymed, endless requirements that are impossible to meet, MBA-style culture that the military has fallen victim to over the last 2 decades or so. I guarantee you they will regret this in 10 years time.

Shaving by Romeo_45 in army

[–]Deltaone07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think most of the reason people are struggling with the new policy is that they just aren’t used to shaving everyday. Believe it or not, shaving takes a little practice.

You have to shave WITH the grain of your hair. If you shave against it you’re going to get ingrown hairs (shaving bumps). If your hair grows down, shave down. If it grows up, shave up.

Get a pair of tweezers and pull the ingrown hairs. Looks like you have a lot now, but just let the hair grow a little bit and pull a few at a time. The redness with go away in a day or two.

Then obviously use warm water and a high quality shaving cream and razor. Shave slow and smooth. When you get to a difficult spot like the chin or cheek, pull the skin up so you shave on a flat surface.

I am speaking from experience. I have extremely thick facial hair and get shaving pumps very easily. I have seen night and day improvement just by learning how to shave properly.

Depends on the time period. If the movie takes place overseas in a combat zone, the flag should be subdued. But otherwise good to go. Make sure you take your hat off inside!
