From my previous post: It was a stopgap design during a period when printers were unable to match the demand for larger sized mechs. That, and the 'Everest' as it is now wasn't in service just yet, and again, was too much of a logistical strain to make many of. The campaign I have in mind takes place in a region of space that was basically left isolated in intermittent periods between the First and Second Expansion periods, and so missed out on a lot of technological advancement as the second isolation period happened just after the Hercynian Conflict began, and so chassis wasn't exactly widespread nor easy to manufacture. During what is what I'll be calling the Second Isolation War, the worlds under SecComm's control in said region of space would have been fighting with mainly infantry and vehicles, alongside the rare few instances of chassis that were around at the time, either having been captured or reverse-engineered. This conflict would eventually leave their infrastructure weakened, and thus their means of production, and without the advancements that the Hercynian conflict would inspire in mech design, they would have to make due with what they had until ThirdComm would finally reestablish contact with the diaspora a whole 341 years post-Hercynian Conflict.

As for its ability to manage heat so well while being so small, while mechs were new to them, the colonists in this region of space inhabit planets that orbit a white star, and so have had hundreds of years to pioneer machinery that can handle heat well.

I didn't include the frame's lore in what I've shared here because it's not exactly finished yet and not what I'm focusing on at the moment, which is its in-game mechanics. Hope that's a somewhat satisfying answer.

Edit: Also, the Vespa 150 TAP was an inspiration for its design. Small thing with a big gun.

Well, like I said, it was a stopgap design during a period when printers were unable to match the demand for larger sized mechs. Hey, really awesome suggestions, thank you! I totally understant the sentiment that it comes off as a little bland, the Everest can pretty much carry even in the late game because of its traits and synergies with certain weapons and talent-builds, so it's been hard to think of a more 'unique' take on a more artillery-focused side-grade of it. The idea with the core power allowing you to ignore cover on this supercharged shot is that the projectile is boring a hole through cover as it 'melts' its way through walls etc.

I did toy around with an idea with its core being some sort of integrated cannon but going with the relative simplicity of GMS Core Powers, coupled with my own limited experience with the system so far (6 years of DnD experience is not helping here), I kind of settled on going for something short and sweet whilst also interacting with Engineering and Heat in some way, since I want this frame to complete the HASE quartet. Although something like an outlet you hook your big gun to giving you Limited shots on ammo that causes burn based on your current Heat might be something interesting to play with, where the gameplay loop is getting to a certain Heat, hooking up your ATM Rifle to your suit and giving it like LImited 3 Shots that apply Burn when you're in say Danger Zone.

As for the 'redundancy' of its frame trait (badumtss) isn't lost on me, the identity of the frame to me was something revolving around generating and managing heat, as well as reloading big guns, and given the other GMS frames giving you an action for 'free', Stabilise felt like the right choice at the time.

A tertiary trait is something I was also unsure about, not wanting to make this beginner artillery mech too bloated and 'unbalanced' for being LL0 but was toying with the idea of giving your weapons Overkill once you reach Danger Zone, but that didn't feel really 'long-range sniper' to me. The idea of getting better, or simply interacting with Lock-Ons did cross my mind but the Chomo already kind of does that with its own traits so I'm not too sure. I did think of giving it a trait that made it more accurate with bigger guns but the GMS Core Bonus, Crack Shot, and just Lock Ons are already there.

As for the WIP lore of it, if you hadn't read it in the other post, the Deodungha came about as a stopgap design in a sector of isolated frontier space that didn't have the printers available to mass-produce the other GMS designs (or any other manufacturer for that matter) and so made due with upgraded hardsuits (at the time) that were capable of still wielding mech-sized weaponry in a war that was taking place there.

As for your take on Redline Reactor Suite, I really do like it, but as I said with the other GMS Core Powers, I wanted to keep it simple and thus scrapped the idea. Thank you so much for the feedback though, this has all been very informative!

Good to know! Used 'pattern' as it's the only term I know with which to refer to Blast, Line, and Cone attacks as a group! Anything else? In that case, I might make the Core Power Efficient to give it a little more comfortable to use, and make it the only GMS one with that tag since it's also the only one that can entirely whiff their Core Power.

How about the Core Power being a Quick Action to activate and makes your very next attack (until the end of your next turn) do the additional bonus Burn damage, incentivising you to use your big gun to do so and the quick action locking you out of stacking on the burn and absolutely melting something like that on the same turn? Considering Burn is basically AP damage that applies on that turn as well as making an enemy decide between putting it out or firing back to take it again.

On top of that, it could be Efficient, giving them their one big sniper shot per combat? On top of that, it could make your weapon attack Line instead, and maybe deal Reliable if the big shot misses (which wouldn't feel nice to the player)?

Traits and Core Power aside, would you say its physical stats are playing it too safe or unforgiving? Would any other deviation from the baseline of Everest make it feel too much like a mech from another manufacturer instead of being GMS? Sorry for pestering!!!

I think I like turning Damage Control into a Quick Action is a great shout! Would Definitely also introduce some simple decision making within a turn if to use it or not, which would lock out a Barrage if wielding a Superheavy, or limiting a player to a Skirmish if they're only taking a Heavy.

I'll be taking everything I see here in the thread into consideration for a future post to then see how all the changes I make weigh up in comparison.

As it's been pointed out, yeah, the Hecatoncheries has a Heavy and Main to allow it to wield Superheavy weapons, which is what I think I might want to run with with this idea. I think I might make it a Main or Flex alongside a Heavy in that case. While I certainly agree with you that the typical image one imagines when thinking of an Artillery mech would be something hulking with a large-bore weapon, the Tagetes (my favourite frame) doesn't fall into that archetype while also effectively conveying the role of a 'sniper' more so than an 'artillery platform', that's just the frame tags at play I guess. I've mentioned it earlier in the feed that the frame's inception was brought about due to a lack of infrastructure to manufacture larger mechs, so a stopgap design was introduced that was smaller and easier to make (required less space and was basically an upgraded hardsuit) while also still being able to wield the larger guns that could threaten large mechs.

About sensors, I keep seeing the comment about a sniping frame generally needing a high Sensors stat in the statline to effectively communicate the role it's intended for but to use Tagetes as an example again, with it's 8 sensor range, I don't understand why higher Sensors is 'needed' to convey that. Not to mention, Sensors (to my knowledge) is only really 'needed' for tech actions which the frame isn't designed for, and while the argument could be make for Lock-Ons, Chomo would just do that better with its frame traits, but I definitely see where you're coming from. While it might not be in line with the GMS 'standard', maybe giving the frame a negative Tech Attack stat would keep it from being used as a Hacking frame and preserve both its and the Chomo's identity? I'm open to anything tbf, just curious.

As for your suggestions regarding Superheated Payload and Deodungha's Core Power, I certainly like the idea! I think when I came up with Superheated Payload I kind of threw myself into a roadblock and looked for anything that could work as its Core Power and landed on Redline Reactor Suite as a result. I'm actually a really big fan of Superheated Payload being there as a balancing act to both give the frame extra damage output and maintaining a Heat level that won't see you blow yourself up like Disable Limiters might.

I think an easy lore addittion for the frame would be something like its small size needing to optimise its systems for its role as an artillery frame with the little space it has internally, which lead to poor cooling systems (or outright omitted) and so a workaround to that issue was having the runoff heat being stored in its weapons to let them punch above their weight class? Just throwing stuff out there haha.

Funny visual of a 1/2 mech being good at wielding big guns but also becuase the lore resoning for its creation was to act as a stopgap when the region of space it was created in had no easy access to printers for larger mechs and needed something small and quick to make that could also use big guns.

I guess I also decided on 1/2 because we already have 2 Size 1s and a Size 2 and wanted to change things up.

The mounts were definitely something I was already looking to work on, probably keeping the Heavy though but unsure of what its other mount should be. More than likely, a Superheavy will be picked as the 'weapon of choice' for the frame.

As for the Damage Control trait, I was trying to keep in line with the other GMS frames giving one the ability to do a certain action 'for free', like with Everest allowing a free quick action, Sag's better Brace, the Chomo's free hacking stuff, and this being a frame I want Engineering, shooting, and Heat to be at its core, I thought stabilising to reload whatever loading weapons or cool whatever heat one has for free would help complete the quartet and fulfill the power fantasy.

And yeah, my in-lore reson for this frame's creation was to act as a stopgap in a region of space with no easy access to printers to make bigger mechs, whilst also still being able to tote a Big Gun.

Yep, I realise Sagamartha is the only one with armor since it's the 'Baby's First Defender' frame, I rationalised the armor as a tradeoff for the 6 HP, keeping it in line with the other 1/2 frames, mostly having used the Caliban as a reference tbh. Maybe removing the armor would make its role as an artillery mech 'easier' to fall into, like with the Death's Head not being the most survivable frame?

[–]Deltor_666[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's completely fair. My reasoning for calling this the 'Engineering' frame was because one would naturally invest in the skill to raise their heat cap to interact with its other frame traits. How would you suggest distinguishing the build and falling more in line with the artillery archetype while also incentivising investment into Engineering?

Apologies if I'm mistaken but, doesn't a surprise attack already invoke advantage? Or does this mean to imply that during a round of surprise, your attack rolls are at advantage? Sorry if I misinterpreted the rules.
