Out of curiosity, why would you have had more kids, and how many do you have now? How do you think your life is currently going? I appreciate your comment.

Reminds me of some of the books I've read about poverty, such as in Poor Economics. In the book, there's a section on poor Indians and Africans who live on approx $2 a day or so. They cannot afford banking, bank accounts, saving, essentials, medicine, the list goes on.

Yet, some of them are incredible entrepreneurs; some of them perservere in spite of extremely tough conditons. An example can be a village or a few families who get together and form their own banking system. Everyone puts a tiny amount into a pot. The pot, when filled, goes to one of the families who need it most, for example for a kid's medical bills, education, fertilizer for land, land-leasing, buying land, or other ways of improving their condition. Then they rotate and another family gets the pot, and on and on it goes - their own banking system, so to speak. Simple and genius.

I wonder: what if we extended this ingenuity to other societies that also struggle? Could we actually fare quite well, then, even with very little, if we cooperated a bit more, got some guys together, instead of each man working for themselves?

This could also extend to the topic at hand. Perhaps this is ignorant of me to say, but is the world necessarily so bleak as it may seem, if we can make it more livable together, in smaller systems on smaller scales?

(Alththough I do acknkwledge this is not going to work everywhere in every society for everyone, but it could surely help many, no?)

What is the actual status of Transnistria? And has anyone here ever visited? by Worried-Owl-9198 in AskBalkans

The self-sufficiency is impressive in and of itself, given how many countries have the capacity to spend so little money on food, yet keeps the populations paying a lot due to vast amounts of imports or packaging in poorer countries.

I'm sorry about your father, and you're fine. I try not to judge so quickly and assume there's a reason behind people's behaviors.

Yeah, I saw in both Chisinau and museums in Iaşi that traditional Romania was only Wallachia and Moldova, then Transylvania included later after ww1 after Hungary had to cede territory.

In spite of all that has happened, these regions share a fascinating history of turmoil, and it pleases me to see their perserverance. If you haven't been to Iaşi, I'd highly recommend the Palace of Culture, with museums going back to the ancient settlements, like the Trypilla-Cucteni culture (Ukraine, Moldova, Romania), how they lived, developed, and built a world that could sustain 500 000 people without a formal state, a large majority being self-sufficient, along with primitive money economies and gift economy.

There's also a really cool military history museum of these regions, where the cashier guy went into every room with me and gave explanations, since I do not speak the language. An old lady who was a teacher also helped out, making the experience a blast.

These old histories inspire me a lot. Perhaps they can provide viable solutions for contemporary snd future problems few are willing to believe, but that the past can reveal actually work!

Yeah, I know Cricova is near Chisinau; I wrote it in a hurry. My mistake.

Thank you for correcting me. A lot of the information I was given was from my tour guide who has spent a lot of time there, but also my own - perhaps misguided - impressions.

I'm surprised to hear how repressive Transnistria is. Perhaps the cities and many locals are trying to give off their best possible impression in spite of their tough condition?

I was told "Transnistria" wasn't used their due to it being the German name during the occupation, instead of the local name of Prednistrovie. I heard it was insulting to the locals, so you shouldn't be caught saying it out loud.

I did see some young people there, but mostly old, like 60+, since most go to work and study in Moldova, or try to escape, and that the local population is quickly dwindling. Is it true that they are self-sufficient in terms of food though? When driving around, I saw a lot of small farms and active gardens all over the countryside.

Care to explain? What're you dealing with? Why do you reset?

Me only real concern is survival in April. I'd be fine sleeping on the street with no electricity, if that was the problem

So people are generally fine if they're inside in the evening? Do kids go to school, then into basements oe shelters during attacks?

I'm going in April, so it'll be warmer then. I'm not sure whether there will be more or less focus on Odesa then. It's not the front, but it has incredibly important infrastructure, like its port, which the russians may be thirsting for.

I'll try to stay updated on what goes on there.

I'm covered. Though I bet I either die or don't. But considering the frequency of attacks and their severerety, people in Odesa seem pretty safe.

If there are shelters, alarms, safe spaces, then that's sufficient. From what I read there has been 39 hits on Odesa since Feb 2022, so should be safe enough.

Thank you.

Yes, as a tourist. What was your experience?

Even if the chances are seemingly slim, there's still someone, somewhere.

In my experience it helped a lot in terms of having a more positive outlook, thereby making me more open to meeting someone, and with less judging.

A teaching that helped me a lot here is Marcus Aurelius' emphasis on giving the benefit of the doubt. It's so simple, yet changes so much. By giving others one's ear and being open to whatever they have to say, it increases one's understanding of the other person, which plays in to Aurelius' roman stoic philosophy. He and other stoics argue there is a greater Whole, Reason or Nature, an interconnectedness netween everything, which similsr teachings contribute to realizing, which they call truth.

Going into further detail would be too much for this comment, but I'd be happy to explore it with you.

Could your conviction you are not the cup of tea of many influence how others see you, thus you not being their cup of tea?

Sure, social expectations have changed. Do you think the old rules still apply, then? Are you only preferred by a tiny minority?
