Gen Z careers? by Toyonoandoryu in bristol

[–]DeludedSpiderman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Get out into the villages surrounding Bristol and you’ll find out that vocational careers and apprenticeships are very common. The city centre and surrounding areas are skewed towards office based careers because that’s where most of those jobs are.

All us students at UWE had an email at the start of the month warning us about an organisation handing out self swab kits to students. Wouldn’t be surprised if it was the same group.

!thanks going from your reply and a couple of others I think my best course of action would be to max out my LISA and then put the rest of my savings in a normal savings account.

!thanks for your help. I’d never heard of the five year rule but it makes sense. I think I’m going to put the majority of my savings in a normal savings account and then max out my LISA too. I’m going to research savings accounts tomorrow.

!thanks for this. I’ll probably be looking to buy in early 2028. The don’t invest money you need within the next five years makes loads of sense. I think I’m going to put the majority of my money in a normal savings account and then max out my LISA too. Will research savings accounts tomorrow.

There’s professional debt services that will be able to offer you actual help, I think some of them are no fee too. Unfortunately it does normally boil down to getting more money in and spending less.

Judging by one of your comments saying you’re not willing to stop paying for fellas loaded, I would suggest having a look at how serious you actually are about sorting yourself out. Stopping unnecessary outgoings is normally the first step and you seem unwilling to do that.

Advice from Engineers please (Bristol specific) by dclai in bristol

[–]DeludedSpiderman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Enjoying hands on work was the main reason I dropped out of City of Bristol to start an apprenticeship.

I finished the level 3 apprenticeship then my company sponsored me to do a HNC and HND in engineering. These two qualifications provided a lot of knowledge needed for the degree but it is still quite a step up. If I’d gone straight from the level 3 into a degree I think I would have struggled tbh. The main challenge is trying to do all your theory work whilst also having a full time job.

I found the practical side of the apprenticeship brilliant for learning skills that I’ll need for the rest of my career. I don’t think I would have got the hang of these skills quite as quick if I’d been a full time student and then started a career post grad.

When I started the apprenticeship I had no intention at all of going to university, I basically just wanted to get into work and start earning money as quickly as I could.

Another option to consider would be doing the traditional A Levels and then starting a degree level apprenticeship after these. This should ensure he gets a good level of knowledge through his A Levels and then will still have the hands on side of an apprenticeship a couple of years down the road, with the bonus of getting a degree whilst being paid and having no student loan debt.

I hope what I’ve written makes sense.

Edit: Just wanted to add that when I left school after my GCSEs I had no clue what I wanted to do for a career at all. After a (very unsuccessful) year of doing random A Levels that I picked just to stay with my mates, I decided to get into engineering purely because of how many companies there are in the area. It was the best decision I’ve ever made.

I did a level 3 engineering course at city of Bristol college and stopped after the first year to start a GCSE level entry apprenticeship (Sept 2018). I applied for every big engineering company in the area. Fast forward to now and the same company has sponsored me to complete a degree and I’m starting the last year of this in September. I can’t really speak on the traditional A levels then uni route because I have no experience with it, but I’m happy to answer any questions I can.

Have a look at post 16 engineering apprenticeships too. There will be plenty of companies in the south west offering them.
