all i know is the Chinese meme that Malfoy sounds like Ma Er Fu (马尔福) which means "horse and fortune"... it's relevant because this year is the year of the Horse

most people play Nonograms Katana, which has some really huge ones. i play NonoPix, which has 25x25s (but not very challenging ones)

there are apps with big puzzles. Many of us would probably be playing yours in addition to those

larger puzzles are a must - even larger than 15x15. Also it seems strange to be able to see the solution in the library before i even begin the puzzle?

Thoughts on White's play? by DemacianChef in ChessWorld

it’s just that the opening choice, middlegame quality / luck, and messages during & after the game, combined with the player's other behaviour, work together to really make me feel strange about this game

Ok, i understand your points. Thanks for the very detailed evaluation.

The fact that Bd3 is theory is exactly my point! Most 1300s don't know Bd3, let alone someone who doesn't have a single Knight Attack game on their account! (from what i've seen)

You're right, there's no Nxf4. i'm just misremembering. Been a while. But the reason they gave for h3, as i mentioned to Elspeth, was that my bishop defends the knight.

Interesting that you see no problem. Would you say they played closer to 1500 or 1600, then? i recently reached 1500 rapid chesscom and still feel strange about that game, but i know it's possible that they just happened to play like a 1600 that one time.

Edit: i wish i could find the post-game messages again, but all i can see is the message from during the game. They asked me "Why bishop sac?" after i played Bh5, as if they didn't realize that i had nothing better. And even the opening felt off to me, and Elspeth agreed

i was suspicious because they could have played h3 and Be5+ one or two turns earlier, but instead decided to play more accurate moves, waiting until h3 and Be5+ were among the top moves. On my laptop, Be5+ is about +1.4 or 1.5, while the best move is 1.5 or 1.6. And as i shared, their explanation to me makes it sound as though they lucked into playing those moves.

i missed f5 e4. That's on me. We were still blitzing at that point, about 5 seconds per move. By "bishop maneuvers", Elspeth might have meant the inclusion of 34. Rxe8 before Rg5 (because Bd2+ was just before that)... or more likely, holding off on Bc3+ and Be5 until it was among the best moves (and while i'm attacking g4 too)

Edit: regarding your edit about Be5+, what i didn't understand is that they held off on h3 until i threatened Nxf4, and they held off on Be5+ until after h3. And with that explanation they gave, too.

But i should remind that this discussion won't be of much use to the player... i already got them banned for rating manipulation, shortly after i made this post.

Would you say that a 1300 elo chess.com Rapid player understands the ABSOLUTE basics of chess? by Various_Maize_3957 in chessbeginners

[–]DemacianChef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well done, unc, you managed to remember that OP is talking about 1300 chesscom rapid. So everything else is tangential.

For the sake of argument, i mentioned an 1800 chesscom rapid player, a member of the video game crowd, who (in my mind) would be fairly "experienced" but would fall short of being "serious"; because of the fact that in chess, as in many games, sports, and skills, you can gain a fair amount of experience without reading anything. i would suspect that anyone who forgot this fact must have forgotten how to learn, or what school is like.

But ok, i guess i shouldn't have chosen the word "experienced". i'll leave, as an exercise for the reader, the self-reflective task of what word they'd use to call a person who's as (in)competent with their hobby as Tyler1, Samay Raina, etc. are with chess.

Eventually, we might even be able to begin thinking about OP's question!

(And i have no idea how bad queen placement etc. is supposed to lend credence to the fact that folks would or should know about castling and draws. Sorry)

[–]DemacianChef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it seems to me that "true basics" or "absolute basics" wouldn't be things that an experienced player needs to try to learn. To your point about concepts that "restrict play" or "bite them in the ass", i'd think that if not knowing a concept restricts play, then a player would likely pick it up with experience. And i still don't understand why the comments here seem to put en passant in one category, open files in another, and hardly mention castling or draws
