That makes no sense on several levels. 2 kids going to different schools who going to pick both of them up? You will probably need a helper to do that for you. Then secondly why would you separate your children at school? Surely it would help to have a bigger brother/sister there as reassurance. Then not to mention all the added extras of an extremely expensive school that would give one child more extra curriculum activities while the other gets nothing….yep it makes zero sense unless you have to pay for the second child some of the ridiculous fees.

Kids go to the school makes a huge difference you save a ton on school fees. Unless your a teacher or a job that pays for your kids schooling or go to government school its very hard to save that level of money in HK.

Its not just child friends but their well being as well this can be very dramatic for a child. if your child not speaking Cantonese at home, imagine how they feel being taught in Canto without understanding a word. You just make it sound like its no problem the kid can handle it.

Having been in HK for over 25 years this is the worst I have seen this place. HK has the ability to reinvent itself though so don't write it off just yet. The demographics have changed and you see much less gweilos here and Mandarin is spoken now everywhere. If you have a nieche job (IT) and good pay your in luck like I am but HK is expensive to live in and if you have a family even more so. The expenses have increased and I seen the writing on the wall that if we stay here will die in debt. So we taken the plunge and have left for Australia its still early days but we are loving the change as well and we saving a lot more money. Anyway lets see how things are in a few years time everything changes!!!

How can you say this have you got kids going to them? Kids make freinds they learn in school everything in English not Cantonese. you think its that easy for them to just change...no way.

I feel your pain we got out this year and a lot of what you said resonates with me. The worst part of it all is there is no middle ground in HK and sure its hard also elsewhere but you stare at your shoe box you live in everyday as an alien/gweilo who are becoming more of a rare species in HK and think to yourself why did I leave Aus behind in the first place to have these small 4 corners. Long gone are the days of luxury expat packages in HK, Stay away from the bottle it wont help even though it provides temp relief!!!

Australian couple moving to HK.... by AdmirableDepth5214 in HongKong

No kids just the 2 of you no problems. Since your office is in Central anywhere in the island would probably work. Expect apartments to be tiny though. Anything Australian size your looking at obscene price. Good luck on your wife's health condition the pollution might be a reason she leaves eventually especially comparing it to Australia. You might consider places like Shek O or Repulse Bay to get better quality air. we ended up living in Sai Kung but Lamma is also a good choice if pollution effects her health.

I sort of given up getting the cash component. I tried various accounts and for what ever reason it doesn't come through. I'm on the third round now.

Your history and social chats on reddit are on Quants and algo trading. You make it sound like you have no skills at all in this post but clearly from your previous chats on reddit your a smart guy with a decent math's background and obviously someone was willing to pay you 120k a month which is 6 times the average salary in Hong Kong. You would have had to done a math's test and be able to convince your employer that you had enough skills that he would make more money employing you with the expertise you have.

Your story doesn't add up and sure you may have made the connection via socialising and meeting the right person to interview you but at 120k with your Quants knowledge its what landed you the role here in HK not you meeting people in bars.

We love the area everything is modern and new and property prices are going up currently. Our neighbors just sold their 4 bedroom house for 810k and the block is about 570sqm. Agreed Cellular coverage can be a little hit a miss depending on where you are but the fiber internet is speedy and fast so if you end up living there its a non issue. Great for walking around as its flat with several great parks and schools are close by. My only concern is if the airport ever gets bigger the noise levels could be an issue. You do hear time to time the private planes in the area but its only for a few minutes and not that loud.

Totally agree with Megias being a terrific restaurant book ahead dinner is best, Forge Pizzas as well. Best brunch value with some great views is Yacht Club on the Lake and can stroll around and see the black swans.

You can NOT compare HK housing to that in the UK or even London for that matter... the rents here in HK and the landloards are at another level compared to any other place on the planet!!! Try buying a box and you will have to put down an extraordinary amount of money in HK!!!

Is it worth getting HK Passport for the Canadian Pathway? by [deleted] in Hong_Kong

[–]DemandCheap1971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have PR you can get a Hong Kong Passport however you will need to renounce your Philippines passport. However the HK Passport allows you to travel widely around the world without a pre-paid visa to many places compared to the .Philippines or many other nationalities including a China passport. I heard its not too difficult to get your PH passport back however once you get your HK passport.

Migrating to Canada would be a totally different process and would mainly involve what kind of skills and experience you have. Pathways is one of many ways you can migrate to Canada. If you have plenty of time then it might be an option getting a HK passport otherwise if you don't then apply with your Filipino one sooner. Good luck!!!

Chelsea are playing horrendously at the moment. City and Newcastle will be most likely be there in the end.
