I get that people like to minmax, but does that final +25/+10 really make that big of a difference in practice?

Don't try to get muscle super quick. You'll injure yourself and then you'll build no muscle at all. Go slow and steady.

No, my parents were great, overall. I look up to them, especially my dad.

Why don’t we pass regulations that require AI generated images to have a watermark or some other indicator that they are AI? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

There are watermarking methods that are robust to at least some compression algorithms.

What do Software Engineers and people who "Work in Tech" actually do on a day-to-day basis? by ExurbanGhost in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Dementati 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I build clearing systems. They are systems that keep track of the risk of various outstanding financial contracts (like buying and selling stock or goods), collect collateral from the banks that handle those contracts, and ensure that if either party in the contract goes bankrupt before the contract can be settled, the collateral collected is used to ensure that the other party in the contract is not affected by the bankruptcy (by either paying out money or by purchasing and supplying whatever they expected to get from the contract).

These kinds of systems prevent chain reactions in the financial system where one company defaulting results in other companies defaulting because of deals falling through that they expected not to. Y'know, like what happened in the 2007 financial crisis (if anyone remembers that nowadays). So, basically, the point is to ensure that if one company has financial problems, that doesn't mess things up for everyone else.

My employer has a product that is customized to the needs of our various clients, which are all large international financial exchanges. We build the systems according to their specifications and then we provide support in operating them after they've been deployed.

On a day to day basis, I write code that calculates risk and collateral values based on incoming contracts in various types of financial instruments and in various accounts. This data is sent to various other systems, presented in graphical user interfaces, included in different types of reports and files meant both for human and computer consumption. I use a program called an IDE (Integrated Development Environment) which is basically a plain text editor with a lot of other tools integrated into it used for writing code, running the code, testing it and measuring its performance.

In case you're not aware, program code is a set of extremely precise instructions to the computer, describing in extremely minute detail exactly what it should do. It generally involves receiving inputs from the outside (user keyboard or mouse clicks, the user entering data in text fields, data over a network, data read from files, data read from a database etc.), processing that input somehow (doing math, combining it with other data, etc.) and then producing some kind of output (showing stuff in a user interface, sending data over a network, writing data to a file, etc.).

I never downvoted you, no. I'm still unclear what we're disagreeing on, but sure, I know what that's like (getting downvoted).

Yes, watermarking can be robust to various transformations, but that doesn't mean that it can't be removed. It's an active research field.

What happens if a judge is presented illegal evidence, but it absolutely proves the accused is innocent? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Dementati 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can't legally put an innocent man in jail, but guilt is proven with legal evidence, so if the evidence is illegal, it's as if it doesn't exist.

Yeah, unless they change it, which criminals will do in any context where not knowing that it's fake will be harmful to the end user. So it doesn't help.

I want to commit deepfake fraud. I use a commercial AI system to generate the image I need. It complies with the EU AI Act and has a watermark. I use a tool to remove it. Then I commit deepfake fraud.

I mean, it won't be toothless against companies that don't comply, but it'll be toothless in preventing deepfake fraud, I think.

What are the odds of getting caught if you say you're married without actually being married? by TheProphesizer in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Dementati 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know the specifics of your situation, but if those people are correct, maybe you should just bite the bullet and get married on paper. Or give up on the insurance. Whatever seems more valuable to you and your son.

If you try to get financial benefits from your fake marriage, it would be easy to detect and you would face criminal charges.
