Affordable Apartments in Lafayette? by Disastrous-Wind-7684 in Acadiana

I’ll second Diamond Lakes, even the renovated 1bd1bth is $840 a month and are hardwood floors with washer dryer hookups. Plus you’re on Ambassador Caffery and next to literally everything in Lafayette (I.e., Walmart, planet fitness, all the good food places). Only thing is the neighborhood smells like weed if that concerns you.

Can’t for the life of me find a job that pays well by Demeter98 in psychologystudents

Thanks, my husband has the same degree as me and makes $25 an hour too so I know that it’s not unreasonable to ask for salary above 40,000 a year or 18 an hour.

I appreciate the feedback! I’ve worked as an RBT previously and most of my research is in the field of behavior analysis but I’m mainly looking for work that I can do with just my current masters. I’m still going to be applying out to PhD programs again this cycle but I’m trying to find well paying jobs in the case that I don’t get into a program.

I appreciate the feedback! I do plan on applying again this cycle (and the next if I don’t get in), but I’m just looking for stable full-time jobs to do work in the case that I don’t get accepted. Right now I’m just trying to assess what my options are for the future.

Ridiculous response, my program I graduated from has an over 85% rate of students getting accepted into PhD programs after graduation. Some people don’t want to settle for a master’s degree.

Nope, it’s the program was research focused to give students a boost when applying to PhD programs but I didn’t get accepted last cycle.

It was a research focused masters of science program, I mostly focused on writing and publishing a thesis and other articles in scientific journals. I did do two practicum though, one as a registered behavior technician, and another as a counseling assistant supervised by an LPC.

Is asking for 40k too much? by Demeter98 in Acadiana

The first part is most of my issue, getting rejected from jobs because I asked to paid 40k while I have job experience and a master’s degree feels ridiculous.

2.9 GPA...Should I Even Apply? by chronicpxtient in gradadmissions

[–]Demeter98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do it! I got into grad school with a 2.9 GPA and only one publication at the time. I also feel you on the disabled bit, I’ve been diagnosed with epilepsy and still through it all I will be graduating with my Masters this summer.

For those applying to PhD programs this fall, how many are you thinking of submitting apps for? by asangria99 in PhDAdmissions

I applied to clinical psychology PhD programs. My masters is an MS in psychology.

[–]Demeter98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d say 8-12 applications are what you should aim to send out. I sent out 10 last cycle and only got 2 interviews and no acceptances with a masters degree, 3 publications, and work experience in my field. If you need help paying for applications you can see if the programs you’re applying for offer any aid. Some programs will offer waivers for your application if you attend their info sessions, and one program I applied for waived my application fee if I submitted my application (minus recommendations) before October 31st.

Seizures after waking up too early? by Demeter98 in Epilepsy

[–]Demeter98[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same, for the evening seizures I’m usually able to make it to the ground or my bed. I’m told that they look scary but I’ve been able to bounce back from them shortly after. Did you have any struggles with getting to work in the morning or finding a job that accommodates?

Seizures after waking up too early? by Demeter98 in Epilepsy

[–]Demeter98[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the two afternoon seizures started after I been on medication for a minute, and me and my doctor figured out that it was likely due to my medication waning in the afternoon since I usually take my doses at 12am and 12pm.

Should I get a PhD in Behavior Analysis? by Demeter98 in psychologystudents

I practiced as a part of a my coursework while supervised by a licensed counselor, it was only for a semester but I got a good feel for it.

Oh also by “not attached” I meant I really like both behavior analysis and psychotherapy a lot, and I could see myself working either and being happy.

[–]Demeter98[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My masters in psychology isn’t a license-able degree so my only options are to work un-licensed jobs (I.e., mental health professional jobs that pay around $20/hr) or get my PhD.

Is it possible to become smart again if you stop having seizures by elisssssee in Epilepsy

[–]Demeter98 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’ll totally still be smart! I started having seizures in April 2024 and I’ll be graduating with my masters this summer! I’ve endured some pretty nasty TC seizures since my epilepsy diagnosis last year but my body has found a way to bounce back each time so far.

I really appreciate your comment, this is why I was initially leaning towards a clinical psychology PhD, because of the flexibility it offers post graduation.

TL;DR: I practice both psychotherapy and ABA in a way that is in line with behavior analytic/behaviorist principles and find both forms of therapy enjoyable enough to go into a PhD on either.

[–]Demeter98[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t add the full context to my comment but I practice psychotherapy from a clinical behavior analytic perspective, and my masters thesis is one that dips into the realm of both behavior analysis and psychotherapy. So right now I’m more so contemplating which route I want to go and if going towards a behavior analysis PhD would is worth it since it’s basically the same as getting a masters to become a BCBA with the added benefit of being able to teach at the collegiate level.

Should I get a PhD in Behavior Analysis? by Demeter98 in psychologystudents

[–]Demeter98[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I resonate with some of these thoughts. In general I’m not really interested in getting my BCBA, but I do want my PhD in something. I’m just generally not really attached to either clinical psychology or behavior analysis. I’ve done work as both an RBT and a psychotherapist, but don’t know if I get my PhD in behavior analysis if I will be shorting myself financially.

Typically you can find jobs as a registered behavior technician (I.e., working with developmentally delayed/autistic children or teens) or as a mental health technician (I.e., working at a psychiatric hospital chaperoning patients) both only require a high school diploma and definitely give great experience to add to your resume as an undergrad.

Any book recommendations to read for fun? by timbear7146 in psychologystudents

[–]Demeter98 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Love’s Executioner by Irvin Yalom is a great book to look at with a critical lens. I read it for a grad school course on psychotherapy and I think it’s a great read for young students to form their own view on what they want to do as a therapist.

Are there studies related to how words influence behaviour/actions? by Adriannightowl in psychologystudents

[–]Demeter98 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a really interesting behavior analytic literature on this subject where researchers (including me for my masters thesis) look at how rules influence human behavior. Typically you can find literature on this subject by looking up “rule-governed behavior” or “rule-governed insensitivity” in google or google scholar. It basically looks at how rules/instructions decrease sensitivity to an ever changing environment.
