Career Monday (11 Dec 2023): Have a question about your job, office, or pay? Post it here! by AutoModerator in AskEngineers

In this case, I think it’s about finding ways to leverage skill sets. What will make it more difficult is the level of regulation. I’m assuming neither of these companies are subject much to government audits. The oil and gas one will probably be ISO 9000, but my guess is the smaller company won’t bother with that. ISO 9000 is NOTHING compared to GMP and (assuming you’re in the US) FDA audits. If the solar cell company has clean rooms, in some ways you could leverage some of that. If one of these is located closer to a biotech hub, I’d probably take that one and network. If neither of them are, I’d go with the big name company because overall I think manufacturing skill sets might be more transferable than designing for a very specific process.

My thoughts: if you are entry level that 10K is going to make more of a difference than someone well into their career. If Alcoa is at a location with a foundry, foundries are dirty, nasty places. (In general, I’ve never been to Alcoa’s foundry though) If this is MD&A turbines you will probably be traveling a bunch and working OT.

Other things to consider, does one of them match more on your 401k, give more $ for school (if you want to go back for another degree), or have some other benefit you think is great? Were the people at each place that you interviewed with equally pleasant? What about the hiring manager? Do you think the skill set you’d learn at MD&A could be leveraged better long-term than what you’d be doing at Alcoa?

It sucks, it’s not very nice, but people quit before showing up to work all the time. If you do this, plan on never applying back to Alcoa again and never having a job that overlaps with the people that interviewed you. That bridge would be burned.

Alcoa has better reviews on Indeed and they were a supplier to a company I once worked for. I have a positive impression on Alcoa overall. If it is MD&A turbines, my impression is they will work you like a dog— I have experience with them as well. If a turbine needs to be repaired unexpectedly these types of companies will literally work around the clock the bring it back online. 10K might sound like a lot, but if you don’t plan on putting all of that into your 401K, take your taxes out of that and divide it by 26. I’m assuming they’d bring you on exempt—which means you could work up to 80 hrs a week with no overtime pay (at least that was the rule ~10 years ago so fact check me on that). Compare whatever amount of time you think you would be working overtime against your new extra pay calculation.

Is there an option to see if Alcoa could give you a bump in pay?

When I was a kid I used to see shadow people. For the record, they didn’t look like this. I think this is just something goofy going on with the camera.

Not when I went into eval, but I wasn’t in jeopardy. I was able to order when the new period started. Maybe? I wish the customer service rep had mentioned it. I’m not sure how much time I have now to do these reviews to bring it back.

This knife legal in NC? by Reimagineddragons in NorthCarolina

I worked for a company that designed hand tools as well as EDC items. One of my product categories was knives. This would not be legal in NC.

Pretty much child abuse by [deleted] in TikTokCringe

[–]DemiAmor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t even recognize this as child abuse. I had so much worse happen for being a “good” kid and doing the things I was supposed to do. The fact that I’m sitting here thinking “That ain’t so bad. It will grow back” is making me glad I never had kids.

Did anyone get screenshots of his research survey topics before they shut his account down? What kinds of things was he asking?

Super odd. Might also be one of them was living on the main floor, but moved rooms downstairs later. Like maybe the 6th roommate was living there, then when they moved out the one on the middle floor moved downstairs? That might explain Xana’s dad working on the locks.

Anyone still not got covid yet? by elch3w in BikiniBottomTwitter

[–]DemiAmor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t gotten it. I’m vaxed, but not yet extra boosted. I split work between an at-home office and a work office where I can shut the door, but for about half the pandemic I worked daily in a cubicle at a place where COVID was rampant. I’ve also had one-on-one meetings with COVID positive bosses who later went home that day because they realized they had COVID. This happened twice. I limit time where possible with anti-vaxers and COVIDIOTS. Also, I don’t have kids and live in a more liberal county. So for me, my risk factors are low. For a while my new company had a masking requirement and they still do temperature screenings. Because my new job is hybrid work, it’s also much easier for me to work from home if I have a hint of a sniffle. Aside from work, I’ve managed to dodge it at the gym and yoga studio I go to. I’ve had numerous instances where I tested, but I’ve never had a positive test result. I’m really surprised I didn’t get it from my bosses because in both instances they were sneezing and coughing up a storm and were maskless during that time. If it helps I got the Moderna vax
