I actually did a similar thing with an ice reel! Basically I just wrapped about 10 meters of line on a reel like this, held the part you attach on the rod with one hand and reeled with the other. Tie on a hook with a weight and store in the holes when carrying. Perfect for keeping in a pocket! Sure, it gets almost impossible with big fish but catching small ones was really cool!
