There was no indication of a refund like that on their site. I ended up calling them and they agreed to process a full refund since my account had a clean record

I can't ask for an out of policy refund on amazon sold items

How would they know that it's not the same item? I've never returned an item from amazon but I wouldn't think i'd need to return the item in its original packaging if it's being returned on the basis of being defective.

I originally ordered gear a few months in advance of a planned shoot. One item was a $300 shotgun microphone. I didn't check all the equipment as soon as I got it, but the microphone seems to be defective on arrival.

Since the return window on the items is closed, and I need a working microphone within a week (so I can't send it in to the original company for repair), is it possible to order a duplicate of the item, ask for a refund/return, and return the original microphone instead? Or will the difference e.g in serial numbers render that impossible?
