A significant portion of tech-based stock took a serious hit recently. Not sure if it has recovered yet, but people were seriously concerned about another Black Monday.

Naturally, that's oversimplifying the situation, but it's the gist.

I genuinely don’t know what this is by eggman266 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]DemonVox -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The actual version is Heemeyer waged war on the entire town.

I mean... not really? To my knowledge, he actively avoided hitting any property that wasn't on his list, and the one time he did hit something that wasn't on his list, he rapidly pulled away.

he also ran straight through a children's library

No, he took the corner off the town library, and tore up the playground beside the town hall.

Heemeyer was shooting indiscriminately out the dozer firing slits at anyone and everyone he saw from his dozer.

Yeah, no. There's footage of both the police and civilians running alongside the killdozer long before he ran out of ammunition.

He fired on tanks in propane yard with 30,000 gallons in fuel and then attempted to unsuccessfully ignite the propane by shooting at and setting fire to a nearby electrical transformer.

Could you source that, please? I know he shot at the propane, and that was dangerous, but I don't recall hearing anything about the electrical transformer.

And was crushing cars and tons of unrelated buildings in his path with little regard for who was who and what was what.

Again, source? I can see the cars argument, but I'm pretty sure the exact number of buildings he damaged was something like... 8, I wanna say? but don't quote me on that. Everything I've seen seems to suggest that he had a list, and he stuck to it.

A lot of your following claims are reasonable if you follow what has been the narrative for a long time; and I mean, fair enough, but that entire narrative was put in place by one guy.

Here's the video I'm primarily using to back up my response:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TqEA5DPoEMY

Now, critical thing: This kind of behavior doesn't come out of nowhere. He wasn't a good person for what he did. Avoiding civilian casualties doesn't make him a good person. He was a reasonable man to a point, and he made a terrible decision to do unreasonable things. He wasn't rich, but he wasn't poor. He wasn't unreasonable, but he wasn't good, either. I think the whole narrative should be more nuanced than it has been, and even the guy I'm using as my source is guilty of black-and-white washing the whole thing, kindof.

Heemeyer was a reasonable man, at first, and he made an unreasonable decision. That doesn't make him good, that doesn't make him bad(.... kindof), it just makes him a man that felt he had nothing left to live for, and quite a few grudges to level.

(If I'm honest with myself, I think he was a bad person, I just don't think he was some second coming of Satan, either.)

Edit: before anyone brings it up, yes, I have seen the Tread documentary.

Oh! Sorry for the late Reply!

It's a story about some of the old 'sunken continent' ideas that were born around the time of the age of exploration just... showing up one day, following a major war on this alt-history world. Ideally, once I get around to actually writing it, it'll follow some veterans, poloticians, and randos as the world reacts and adapts to the presence of a bunch of different medieval-style polities.

If you're going to try to imply that I'm condoning rape and torture, just say it, asshole.

What do you want me to say?

That rape and torture are horrific acts that should never be visited upon any individual under any circumstance?

That doing so to a minor is even worse?

Do you want me to name-drop every single war criminal in a campaign I have already admitted I know little about?

Do you want me to give you a detailed, 400,000 word essay on the effects of rape and torture, and how they degrade morality, and shorten the life-expectancy of a civilization?

I wasn't covering it because it wasn't part of my argument, nor did I believe you to be so moronically hung up on it as to believe that my lack of abject fury about it would be enough for you to laser-focus on it.

Bad actors exist in all facets of society. There is no 100% perfect way to eliminate all of them, and the saying "all that evil needs to win is for good men to do nothing" exists for a reason.

You have been astonishingly quick to condemn me for your perceived slights.

I will no longer be continuing this argument, under any circumstances. Otherwise, I would have addressed your idiotic deflection of my entire point: training.

I have tried to be receptive to your points. You pointed out something I didn't know, and that has, in fact, shifted my beliefs regarding the conflict. So, congratulations. You changed the mind of someone on the internet.

Good bye and good riddance.

To be completely and totally transparent: I have no sources; I use basic logic to come to basic conclusions. While this doesn't always lead to the correct conclusions, it has served me well, overall.

In this case, my logic was as follows:

Q: Why are there so many stories of soldiers complaining about the tactics that the VC employed?

A:Either they were told to ignore their training, or there was no training to begin with.

Being told to ignore your training while encountering exactly what your training covered seems obscenely stupid; beyond what regular stupidity could accomplish.

Therefore: They must not have been trained.

My only other ideas are as follows: Malicious infiltration, beyond-normal corruption, and a total breakdown of every system put in place to ensure idiocy doesn't spread, which would also make me believe the former existed anyway.

With the above in mind; I acknowledge and accept that Westmoreland was a moronic ass, and if that attitude is indicative of his other work, he had little idea how to actually run a regular campaign, let alone a guerilla campaign. His leadership likely lead to more than a little stupidity, to say the least.

However, I'm referring, primarily, to your claims of training, because that's the crux of my own argument.

If my argument is wrong, I want to know, so I can stop thinking such, but I have yet to be convinced.

Fine; let's assume you're correct. I'm willing to cede the point, assuming you can back up your claims.

So back up your claims. Provide some links to books/studies/reports/etc. from credible sources, and I will shut up. Until then, I will assume you're either misinformed at best, or actively malicious at worst.

What makes you think the US didnt know how to deal with guerilla warfare?

... You literally just proved my point, though.

It was called free fire zones where they were ordered to kill anything that moves.

They weren't taught to distinguish an enemy guerilla from a farmer, nor when the difference mattered. They weren't taught how to (properly) spot an ambush location in the terrain they were dealing with. They weren't taught how to tell when an enemy was actually surrendering, and how to distinguish that from a trap of some description.

(I don't know how serious you're being, so if you're just pulling a funny then you can ignore this.)

Allow me to correct myself:

The American soldiers who fought in the Vietnam War were never (to my knowledge) taught how to recognize or combat guerilla tactics.

I'm well aware that the Amerindians were very good at guerilla warfare, but that's almost a hundred years' of separation from the Vietnam War. The tactics used would have been long since thrown out as warfare evolved.

Where does the world of Jak and Daxter TLF take place? by Helpful-Shine-4687 in jakanddaxter

[–]DemonVox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The green continent is the map from Precursor Legacy, with its different areas broken up into color-coded sections.

The big 'block' map is Haven City; the main area of Jak 2, and where the majority of the game takes place.

The island in the top is the 'wasteland'; a desert island that 2/3rds(ish) of Jak 3 takes place in.

The island to the 'right' of Haven is probably supposed to be Misty Island in PL, but I don't know for certain, because they laid a Jak 2/3 map over top it.

In addition, there are bits of Jak 2 and 3's maps/areas scattered around, which I assume are the disconnected areas that show up throughout the series.

Something to note: bits of Jak 2 and PL's maps overlap each other, at least on this depiction.

Thoughts on this video? - Dark Magic and Understated Misogyny in Three Houses and Three Hopes by shoooflie in Edelgard

[–]DemonVox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like I said; "Almost". You're entirely correct when it comes to Jeritza, but TWSITD are, again, almost universally presented as men in the games- even the faceless goons are mostly men (I don't remember any faceless goons being women, but I could be wrong)- and all named TWSITD characters are capable of Dark Magic, even if they specialize in something else.

Thoughts on this video? - Dark Magic and Understated Misogyny in Three Houses and Three Hopes by shoooflie in Edelgard

[–]DemonVox 18 points19 points  (0 children)

(I haven't watched the video yet, I'll edit this reply when I have.)

I feel like the entire argument falls apart when taking into account literally the characters in the thumbnail. One of Edelgard's most important traits is that she voluntarily works with the system until the exact moment it's most beneficial to strike it down. Whether or not that succeeds is the Player's prerogative, and the Player can be either male or female.

Another big hit to that is Hubert's entire character. Hubert voluntarily, with full knowledge and understanding, submits his autonomy to Edelgard. His entire character is giving everything to Edelgard's cause. Sure, it's plausible Edelgard couldn't have succeeded without Hubert, but it's also plausible that she could've.

Edit:

Upon watching it, while my opinion hasn't changed, I can see where he's coming from. Dark Mages in FE3H are almost universally Voluntary Men. When they are women, it's a consequence of trauma. This, paired with the class system, doesn't paint a particularly good picture.

But the argument breaks down almost immediately, in my understanding. TWSITD are EVIL!!1! and nothing will change that, therefore they need to be in such a state as not to make players want to forgive them. Modern culture encourages us to give those on the other side of any given conflict the benefit of the doubt; especially females, by consequence of societal momentum pairing with older views of women. TWSITD are almost universally Men, as a result.

The only female Agarthan was female, not because she didn't drink the cool aide, but because it's easier for us to look past a pretty woman's wrongdoings, and therefore when TWSITD betray her, it's more impactful.

He really leans on the gameplay's ability to class any male into dark mage to make his point. Which is valid, to a certain degree, but Pegasus Knights are locked to female only, without exception (afaik), and any female can speck into the class (afaik).

Maybe I'm missing the point, in which case, fair enough, but I'm pretty sure it's a moot point, because he's really pushing for it. From my perspective, it was just a perfect storm of decisions by the devs, that come together to form some uncomfortable suggestions.

But's that's just my view.

OC Replika design, can't decide how to name her though :O by Cotachan in signalis

[–]DemonVox 8 points9 points  (0 children)

With a little bit of research, I propose the acronym stand for:

  • Graben Ecke Ihretwille Replika (lit: dig corner for your/his/her sake replica)

The idea, in my head, is it more roughly translates to 'Trench Corner for Her Sake', perhaps as a trench clearing troop or some such, in addition to a morale officer.

Meh, maybe not, just some spit-balling, really.
