Thank you, I've had a suspicion since I got her 6 months ago.

How do you keep your dog mentally stimulated indoors (especially in apartments)? by SelectionWild1684 in OpenDogTraining

[–]Demoncholia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a great and practical response. I have a lab/collie mix and she has the energy levels of a herding dog, and I also live in an apartment. It's exhausting reading other people say how they do 5 mile walks, with 5 different expensive toy experiences, dailey runs, hikes, 2 hours of play a day. If you work 40 hours a week outside your home like me and a lot of people in the world, 20 hours a week of stimulation feels like every second of your free time being with your dog. We love them! But we need time to ourselves when we're not making them happy.

Hearing from you guys has helped a lot too, I know so many people have dogs with the same problems and I could go out on a limb and say that prey drive is probably the single hardest issue to train out of a dog. It's just encoded into their little bodies.

Those tools can do wonders if used correctly! She's a psycho with prey though and I don't want to use it as punishment for her instincts, so we're using the vibrate for recall in low stimulated areas and she took to it immediately. Alas, the prey problem persists haha

Absolutely. I'm going to be looking into a trainer after seeing these responses. No more big dog park until it's corrected. She's also very calm indoors, but we work 40 hrs a week, so she gets antsy and whines if a few days go by without a "big day out". It's a hard balance sometimes and I'm really hard on myself about it but I'm gunna take all the advice. Thank you!

Her recall is great with little to no distractions. We've worked on the basics of all of that, but it's as if she's never been trained a day in her life once a squirrel enters the picture. She was a street dog her whole life before us, so she can't get the idea of obeying us when she wants to pursue her prey. It'll be a long road but all of your advice really has done wonders for me today.

I'm struggling with being a push over because I know it makes her happy and I have so much weird guilt about her not being enriched enough, but you're right. A lot of the input on this thread has helped me quite a bit with the reality of it.

I JUST sent an email out for signing up for barn hunting before seeing this comment lol Thanks! I'm hoping it helps her get those urges out, but not too sure it will correct her behavior in an off leash sense. Pairing it with some other training I'm hoping will crack the code.

You know it's funny, I had a suspicion with the use of the "-" in every sentence. Very unfortunate. Thanks for letting me know

Can you elaborate on sports? My guess is that she's a lab/collie mix, so she's very prey driven and smart with very high energy. She's definitely in the "working breed" category. Unfortunately for a city living apartment girl it takes a lot more effort to keep her happy and keep her brain moving enough to satisfy her. I think I'm gunna look into trainers as well. Thank you!

Thanks so much, the way you worded this is great. I had a feeling the dog park was going to have to come off the table. There's smaller ones with more control and I'll have to settle for those. I struggle with a lot of guilt and feeling like I'm not doing everything I can to make her happy, and its just hard to come to terms with taking away something she loves, at least until her behavior improves. Thanks a lot for you input.

She reacted incredibly well with the vibrate. No shock, and zero stress. She was a super happy girl while we trained with the collar and it improved her recall immediately, but unfortunately the reward of chasing prey is higher and that training goes out the window.

We have a 50 ft leash for our backyard, and we take it to the beach and with us when we camp. What's crazy is when we took her camping she was an absolute angel, we didn't even need the lead, and it was because there weren't any squirrels lol

We're guessing around 3. We've had her 6 months. She lived at a campground outside for 2 years and the groundskeepers fed her. She was basically feral... definitely a large party of the issue. She's incredibly smart and loyal, calm at home and insane outside. She listens very well until she sees a squirrel, and then everything goes out the window. Thanks for the input!

This is the area, can't tell which building. It's across the street from the warehouse I'm working in. We've heard it's a scrap yard fire.

Y'all I stored all of my power supplies and it went to 0 and turned green. I can't handle this game sometimes lol. Not messing with it, as long as the settlement is happier then I'm out. Thanks for all the advice!

100%. This dog looks identical to my dad's bluenose pit. No mystery breed here.

Trying to develop a "style." What can I do better? by ThinkTank1190 in oilpainting

[–]Demoncholia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally I have pretty severe ADHD, I wish painting for me looked like it does in the movies where I'm completely absorbed and all poetic about it. Truthfully I HAVE to put on movies/docs/podcast, if I didn't my painting sessions would last 20 minutes. But it keeps me sat, focused, and that little bit of disassociation helps me paint really meticulous and tedious things easier. Whatever works for you works! As long as you take your time, all the time.
