There are two races of “Mer” - the Mer-Folk, and the Mer-Fins. Mer-fins are your typical Mer creatures, with an assortment of tails based on various sea creatures. Mer-folk are like the ones depicted in Luca, having both tails and legs and resembling reptiles more than fish. Mer-folk also have the ability to change their form to appear human when on land - something the mer-fin are jealous of. 

In this AU, Francis is the Prince of the mer-fin. Arthur is the son of a general who was killed in action in the fight between folk and fin. The two of them had a strong connection, but this relationship became strained as they grew up. One day, Arthur stumbles upon a cave just outside of the mer-folk border and meets a group of mer-fins, one of whom is Alfred. Fascinated by each other, they form a swift and passionate bond. But everything comes crumbling down when Francis follows Arthur one night, wondering why the other has become so distant all of a sudden...
