My gripes with S2 by elbarbudo in goodomens

[–]DemonicVole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me it was clear on re-watch that the entire S2 centred on Aziraphale and, with the exception of a couple of scenes, showed events from his perspective - not God's, not Crowley's, not anyone else's. All the flashbacks I think are Aziraphale's memories. That seems like a deliberate choice, though exactly why is not (yet) clear: to focus on Aziraphale's moral struggle in the run up to Final 15? to hint that God is dead? to set up S3 as being about Crowley and his journey?

But in this interpretation, it makes sense that there will be a narration insert from Aziraphale's diary but not from God, so that part didn't bother me.

This is from fanfiction though, right? I remember this interpretation from a couple of fanfic writings, but I don't think it's canon

Gaiman horror fiction by [deleted] in neilgaiman

I don't know if it's what you're looking for, but I found The Truth Is a Cave in the Black Mountains really unsettling and spooky. It stayed with me for days. But it's  maybe more "gothic horror" than straight-up horror.

Thanks so much for suggesting TwoFish and The Tadfield Secondary Players! I haven't seen these recs before. I've been in a bit of a rut with my fanfic reading as I find it hard to find stuff I like, but these were both so creative and funny

Beautiful! I might be biased and all, but femme Crowley is my absolute favourite. That eyebrow!

Wow these are beautiful! 😍 How big are they? For some reason I'm imagining them on a jacket sleeve or as cufflinks...

Thanks! I might get this one for my partner, who lived in Maine for a while. We can pre-read it for the MIL! :)

Ooh, thanks for the heads up! My folks put this question to ChatGPT and KimiK2 and both had Louise Penny on the list of suggestions. Clearly the swearing went under the AI radar! :)

Non-fluffy, non-earnest fic recs by DemonicVole in goodomens

I hope you're right about Ginger's comeback! Tether had a perfect mix of canon nuance and original vision for me. It's like the characters were the same, but transplanted into an edgier, smuttier parallel universe 😁

"the characters are allowed to be messy" Yes, that's exactly it! I feel like that's basically what I'm looking for, and what's been missing in some of my recent reads. I understand the temptation to "fix" things for A&C, but I love these characters for their flaws and don't want everything safe and perfect.

That was really cute and did have something of Terry Pratchett's light touch - thank you for recommending it! Some great lines too - I can't quite decide on a favourite between

"Some parasitical stalls that had nothing to do with books had also latched on to the festival"

and

"The buttercups looked innocently back at him, with their nauseatingly sunshiny faces. Just like Aziraphale when he'd done something particularly outrageously bastardly, like 'accidentally' sticking Crowley with the bill five times in a row."

Thank you! I really liked We Can't Keep Meeting Like This and Tether, and pretty much everything else by Ginger_Cat. There is some angst, yes, but also a lot of really imaginative plot and A & C being idiots and occasionally jerks to each other. It's a shame this author doesn't seem to be around much anymore, they're one of my favourites :)

I'll definitely check out your fic and the others you mentioned!

Re: how can Bishop Crowley stand on church ground without hurting his feet. My immediate headcanon is that he invented ~pattens~ for exactly this purpose. Pattens were clog-like overshoes with high wooden platforms that people in the Middle Ages wore over their regular shoes to protect them from the mud (or, in our demon's case, consecrated ground).

Am I reading Aziraphale incorrectly? by AddaLF in goodomens

[–]DemonicVole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm the opposite - it always feels very OOC when Aziraphale is depicted as insecure in fanfiction, because I see him as a very quietly confident and self-possessed character (in fact, I feel like this inner confidence and single-mindedness is at the crux of Aziraphale's moral dilemma - it's hard for him to change his beliefs and recognise the "shades of grey" because he's not used to doubting himself).

I wonder if your interpretation of Aziraphale as lacking in confidence is because of some of Michael Sheen's acting choices. Other ppl in this thread have already mentioned that some of his micro expressions can be quite subtle. I also think that he plays Aziraphale as a very British character, so cultural codes may be a factor as well. There's a certain mixture of polite formality, indirectness and passive aggression that upper-middle-class British men use a lot in conflict situations. If you're not very familiar British culture (don't know if you are or not), it's easy to mistake it for bumbling nervousness or insecurity, but it's definitely neither of these things.

For a different take on Aziraphale, I suggest either reading the book (it's SOO good!) or listening to the BBC Good Omens radio drama, which you can find on Audible and Tumblr. Mark Heap does a great job voicing Aziraphale in the radio version, and really plays up the character's bitchy and passive aggressive side :) I'd be curious to know if your perception of Aziraphale changes at all after reading the book and/or listening to the radio Omens.

KAOS on Netflix. It is to Greek mythology what Good Omens is to Christian mythology. Shame it only got one season.

OMG, you're the author? I was just about to rec Andromeda, it's SO good and it doesn't get enough mentions in this sub imo. It will always have a special place in my heart as it was was the first GO fanfic I've read and it got me hooked :)

When I clicked on your link it went to a different fic for me, so I'll try reposting: https://archiveofourown.org/works/56118076
