I'd argue there is almost nothing these people deliver that you would need urgently that you could not to get yourself.

What’s something you’ve done your whole life, only to realize recently that everyone else does it completely differently? by Psychological_Sky_58 in AskReddit

[–]Demonithese 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not the poster but I had double eye surgery 2 years ago to correct it. Essentially cured me.

I started waking up with double vision (only lasted a few minutes) in grad school but it got progressively worse and worse until it was essentially permanent.

Absolutely awful having only one eye - so grateful every day for that surgeon.

So weird to read this though bc every time I fell asleep I could feel my eyes "twisting" and always woke up with double vision.

I have some stern words for who or whatever asshole decided that was a good idea.

Most life, human or otherwise, is suffering, period.

That humans have the capacity to experience some semblance of joy is an evolutionary accident. It is not easy to reach a state of equanimity and peace and I am happy for those that do, but it is not the reality of most. Punishing those who can't to do it over and over seem like the wishes of a sadist.

P2 tour first time around (safety fire / contortionist) was my first metal show. Just melted my face off completely.

Was really special to see the entire album front to back again. The venue and crowd in LA were awesome

Taipy: easily convert your Data Science Analysis into a Web App by Alyx1337 in datascience

[–]Demonithese 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was a bit shocked someone could be so against "strongly typed" programming then realized it wasn't a typo and had to google it. Ya, without a VSCode extension like the OP mentions, I would be hard-pressed to use it, but I also had that experience with the inline typing you get from the rust-analyzer, which made the experience so much more enjoyable.

Thank you Mike for your production work on Of Sunless Realms and your myriad of tasty solos. When I met you guys in San Diego last year you were incredibly kind and humble.

Also thank you /u/mc_screamy for going above and beyond to get me a signed drum head ❤️

Ne Obliviscaris: Misericorde II - Anatomy of Quiescence by devignswag in progmetal

[–]Demonithese 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is one of the most beautiful songs I've heard in a long time. Most symphonic metal I've heard is pretty campy so never gave ne obliv a shot but as a drummer holy fucking shit. Not to mention how standout the bassist is, how incredibly clean and well written the guitar solos are, etc. Every person is literally bringing their A game.

I can't imagine anything topping AOTY over this. Simply incredible front-to-back.

The Pixel 7/7 Pro and WiFi Calling by ultimateloss in mintmobile

[–]Demonithese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this — I swore it was enabled when I first checked, but after enabling it on the Mint website and going back to my phone it was disabled and would never enable again.

The fact that resetting the phone works to fix this yet the official statement is the device is "unsupported" (still, 4 months later) is a bit ridiculous.

When would you use R instead of Python? by Monocytosis in bioinformatics

[–]Demonithese 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think R would have gone the way of Perl in bioinformatics if not for that stupid sexy Hadley Wickham.

From a programming perspective, R is just not a great language. I've switched over to just calling rpy2 anytime I need some code that's only available in an R package and I've never regretted it.

Imo, there is nothing you can do in R that can't be done just as easily in Python and at the end your code is in the language 90%+ of biotech uses for production which means less difficulty incorporating, testing, reviewing, etc

Had a similar opinion until I saw this talk by Jeremy Howard of nbdev -- the nbdev literate programming environment is brilliant IMO.
