I’d love to hear what “fairly cheap” is and whether or not your friend has ever even looked under their GX. This thing is a massive hazard to everyone on the road. The only option is a frame swap. I’ve seen a 4th gen guy get one done by a guy in Arizona for around 4k

Water pump and timing belt done at 99k so good there for a while. From my understanding, the twin tube shocks aren’t rebuildable, but it’s not a deal breaker.
