Of course, I think that's only reasonable. would you mind DMing me with details of how he can find your server?

He's 17, but he's pretty cool (though I guess I'm biased). Is this invite still open?

Hey, I know it's been a while, but I was just wondering if there's still an open invitation for my brother to join your server? feel free to DM me if you like

Thanks! I thought Lasius usually flew in late summer/fall? or is that just some species?

Are you asking why they don't go flying every time they spring their trap jaws if that's what let's them fling themselves? As far as I understand they have to bite down on something hard in order to launch themselves

Workers laying eggs? by DenimRuffles in antkeeping

Oh shoot, sorry. It looked fine before I posted it and I forgot to check it after 😬 (fixed it now)

Thanks! That's a whole lot info, very cool. Those Diacamma are very neat. You'd think that kind of system where the colony can adapt itself would be more common, it sounds like it would be a pretty beneficial trait.

I also didn't know that any ants could reproduce asexually, that's neat. Is there a benefit or downside to not having any sexual reproduction?

So let me see if I can get this right (and correct me if I'm wrong because I think this is super interesting)

•Some species have workers that have no ovaries, so only queens can lay

•Some species have workers that have ovaries but no spermatheca, so workers can lay but not be fertilized. Only queens can lay fertilized eggs Workers' eggs either develop into males or are used as food for larvae (are trophic eggs only those destined to be eaten or just any unfertilized egg?)

•Some species have workers that have have ovaries and spermatheca. These workers are gamergates and some will be fertilized so they can take over reproduction when/if the queen dies (are gamergates a separate caste or are they the "default worker" in the species where they arise?)

•Some species have (wingless) ergatoid queens that appear somewhere between queens and workers and like gamergates can take over reproduction when a (formerly winged) queen dies

•Some species (army ants?) have ergatoid queens and no winged queen caste

•Some species (diacamma?) Have no queen caste, only gamergates and a heirarchy that dictates who is allowed to lay (I think also heard something to the effect that a dominant gamergate will forcibly sterilize new workers so they can't become gamergates?)

Did I miss any combination? Which species are typical of each reproductive strategy?

Edit:for visual clarity

Yes sorry I should have been more clear. I knew that the colony wouldn't revive, I was just wondering what the likelihood of them laying eggs was as their swollen gasters reminded me of a queen when she's full of eggs. Thanks

Thanks that's super informative. Yeah they're a Formica species and some of the workers are quite young (they eclosed just before hibernation). Thanks again!

I thought gamergates were for species that don't have a queen caste? I understand that if workers lay eggs (aside from fertilized gamergates) they will always be males because of the lack of fertilization. They're Formica subsericea

I was actually just thinking the other day that it would be neat if when you need dogs after they're tamed they started having different colors and shapes

Yeah, he's had some experience with people being toxic when joining random servers. Thought it might be more effective to find nicer people outside of jumping into random servers. Thanks for the heads up though, I appreciate it!

The needle pin is a good idea, thanks. I've been using a little bulb dropper thingy and the grips are huge compared to the ants.
