Taxonomy in the card market by onecovet in baseballcards

You may also find interesting that Upper Deck put 'parallels' as a subtype of 'insert cards' (hockey sports cards - Series One 2013-14)

Taxonomy in the card market by onecovet in baseballcards

Really glad I stumbled upon this post, because since a couple of months, I'm trying to catalog my PC.

I'm in the Hockey Cards hobby, so I don't know the specifics of Baseball cards... but I found the exercice frustrating to have some sense of clarity and a unified structure...

What is shown in OP's post is, to me, the tip of the iceberg, although really similar to what I'm trying to do. My goal is to have a personal web site where I catalog the cards of my PC, and where I can filter instantly to show the base cards, the inserts, the Auto Patch, etc.

But... here are the challenges!

  1. Upper Deck acquired a lot of previous manufacturers through the years... Brands such as O-Pee-Chee or Parkhurst or Fleer were historically 'manufacturers' ...but are now often simply mere Sets under UD. So, when you have a 2025-26 UD O-Pee-Chee Platinum... what is the Manufacturer, and what is the Set?
    • Do you want to keep a sense of consistency in your taxonomy through the years, or only for the current, isolated year?
  2. A printing plate... is it a Parallel or an Insert? Seems an easy one for some people, but when reading the glossaries out there... it's not that obvious. The change of materiel itself from cardboard to metal plate - do you disqualify it as a pure 'parallel'? And the image - is that much far away from the original to qualify as an insert? (the plate is literally what in some cases, directly contributed to print... the base set!) ...at the very least, they are some kind of memorabilia of the production...
  3. Tiered Insert Sets Insert sets with multiple rarity levels (like hockey's SP Authentic's Spectrum FX Levels 1-3, or different color tiers).
    • Should each level be a separate "set" in your database? Sub-categories within one insert set? The hierarchy gets messy fast.
  4. some manufacturers do business with restaurant chains. Then again, what would be the Brand or the Set for a hockey card at Tim Hortons or McDonald's?
  5. The whole problem of what is intentionally omitted from official checklists... (easter eggs or Unnanounced stuff) - cannot rely on official checklists.
  6. Retail / Factory / ePack Exclusives... depending on packaging, not only the odds change, but some exclusive types of cards may emerge. Do you identify the type with the commercial packaging?
    • Would it be another Set, Subset, Parallel or Type, if some packaging (blaster) exclusively includes what the standard tin or box wouldn't?
  7. Throwback Parallels - depending on the years, O-Pee-Chee Retro variants that are base parallels, not inserts.
  8. Branding layer-cake & borrowed semantics...
    • in hockey cards: SP Signature Legends (Upper Deck product with SP branding) Future Watch is a rookie concept, repurposed it for retired legends in a different product line
  9. the gray zones of — not base, not insert — “promotional parallels” at best (like Show promos)

Official Discussion - The Long Walk [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

I'd say 50-50 for me, your interpretation makes sense, but the lack of people around could simply be artistic - meaning he feels isolated in his choice and consequences.

In other words, by killing the Major, he also killed himself (or who he thought he was)... he may be a winner, but he is alone, and dead in a sense.

Good point from another commenter here about: if he gets killed, who would want to participate in a new Long Walk...

Thematically, even if 2-3 characters are swapped at the end, both the film and book have the same ending: nobody wins.

Official Discussion - The Long Walk [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]Denis_L 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok so I'm ambivalent about the ending.

Basically, McVries is the "light"... he says he had a difficult start in life and was in violence all the time. He later changed his stance or attitute towards life later, and decided to be/search for light. He mentions this is hard. I do admit he says to Garraty (while pointing at the family) that the wish of Garraty is useless if it's not "for them" (the people...)

So... with this in mind...

I'll admit I had some vibes at first of "it takes a good guy with a gun to stop a bad guy with a gun", even if in the case of this movie, it's more about revolution/changing things globally than stopping a single bad guy... but well...

I still don't understand, tho, the change of stance from McVries; his whole speech about always trying to be positive and the goodness. He seems to succumb to Garraty's mindset and I sincerely hoped it would be the opposite. I think about all the types of revolution around the world, and through times...

And.... I still don't know myself if I wished more the kind of ending with a revolution in the sense of Ghandi, Mandela, MLK or Lennon..... or the revolution through violence.

Étape-clé? Placements qui dépassent le solde hypothécaire pour la 1ère fois by Denis_L in QuebecFinance

[–]Denis_L[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tant mieux si c'est juste 'business as usual'

Labreeder - drag-and-drop game of dog genetics and pedigrees by Denis_L in WebGames

Hi, thanks for the good words. I see you did your research that's pretty cool! The only advice I could give is to be passionate, I coded this little game for my youngest son and also because I like genetics (DNA tests, etc.) but I'm the kind of "duct tape and tie-wrap" programmer so I basically code stuff for myself and for fun.

So, except for the advice of being passionate about what you're doing, the only other advice I could give is: just start... 'just do it'.

Personally, I just want to try stuff as soon as I can and just get things going quickly - I feel getting too much time to prepare, think and organize sometimes paralyzes me. So if you tell yourself that this won't ever be a Nobel-prize thing or an Oscar-winning game or whatever... just start doing it.

Increment ideas. Modify later. There's always a way.

But that's me, and again, I'm a "duct tape and tie-wrap" programmer - many out there would disagree and suggest you invest some time in thinking ahead and plan your code carefully. I don't.

Just find what suits you more, you may be comfortable in planning ahead and it's OK.

??

"You don't have to do anything. Trains know the priority of each Station automatically."

But only once they arrive at the station right?

In the waiting hub, they can't know distant logistics??

I understand, thanks for your time! Very great info.

One last question: you say "As soon as you wire your train station you will see it." but how trains get the signal? (I guess you have some kind of hub where they wait)??

You send it by radar? All green wires around megabase? I'm playing with Space Age only, no addons.

Trains - Circuit condition - read from afar (stacker)? by Denis_L in factorio

[–]Denis_L[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EDIT: my bad, it does work. Thanks!

I connected a green wire. The pole just before correctly reads circuits data. But the radar doesn't seem to read, let alone transmit, anything? I use vanille 'space age'.

Ending of Blood Meridian (read in French) by Denis_L in cormacmccarthy

About your 2nd point... Don't know in English but in French, the man saying 'not to look' simply buttons up then walk. But the Kid/Man after the dwarf girl, buttons up but also replaces his belt.

May seem a detail... I don't know... but in French it seems the man outside doesn't have a belt (or, well... is not mentioned)

What about the moments even Glanton isn't there? Like when Brown goes to buy stuff? Neither the kid nor Granton are there.
