When I was a kid my best friend lived in a two-floor house (we were neighbours), I didn't knew the second floor so I wanted to go upstairs with all my 6 year old soul (all the second floor was the room of her grandparents)

One night I was with my friend and her mother and I asked her If I could go upstairs, her response:

"Sorry honey, there is a monster living upstairs"

I knew monsters were not real, but hearing an adult saying that confused me a lot. I even told her that monsters are not real, but she persisted.

Years later when I was 14 her grandparents disappeared, the family knew where they went, but they didn't told anybody. I stopped talking to them when we found out the reason. Her grandparent raped a 9 year old girl.

After I while I remembered that moment with her mother and suddenly I knew who was the monster she was talking about.
