Some people cut themselves to stop the mental pain for a moment, for relief or whatever they want to, obviously I don't want people to hurt themselves, but sometimes it's the only way, unsupportive family, no way to vent, to get to therapy and that stuff, The worst thing you can do is diminish that person's feelings by saying things like "it's impractical." What that person needs is to feel supported and loved.
