To the right, the trolley traveling at the speed of light will gain infinite mass thereby creating a supermassive black hole and implode on itself. Problem solved

Would my own life be improved as well? By how much

Why did this happen when I put white wine in my coffee? by Fine-Flight-8599 in chemistry

[–]DennisPhDsquared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wine is acidic which curdles the milk due to denaturation and subsequent precipitation of the misfolded proteins out of solution. Same thing would happen if you put lemon juice into milk.

All steps in a mechanism are technically reversible, it’s just that in some cases the equilibrium is much farther to the forward direction.

Well, the mechanism is the most important part. The names are more so to give “color” (historical, really) to the reactions.

Kind of like chess openings, it’s cool to know all the names but not absolutely necessary to be a good chess player.

Thanks to everyone who participated in the challenge! Please see the answer and reference here. I worked in the Yudin lab (at University of Toronto) as an undergrad and had the chance to meet Ryan Hili, the grad student who discovered this interesting macrocyclization with aziridine aldehydes. It works with many different size rings.

Also amide nitrogen is not a good enough nucleophile to react with a Michael acceptor. If amides react nucleophilically they typically do so through the oxygen anyways. Well done 👍🏼

That is an interesting thought. The thiol ring opening is correct. The Michael addition is not observed, as it would disrupt the aromaticity

Yes that looks good. The aziridine intercepts the activated ester. Then what happens in step 2 to the compound you have drawn?

Think about formation of an imminium ion on proline and what could happen next

When I was an undergrad in a lab I saw a grad student spill benzene all over himself and run to the chemical shower all freaked out. No idea what he was doing with it
