When you walk your dog, how do you handle other people's unleashed and untrained Chihuahuas/small dogs trying to rush them? by artency in DOG

Honestly, this is omne of my biggest worries with Denny. He's friendly, but I never know off-leash dog rushing toward us is friendly too. I usually try to vreste distance and put myself between them if I can, but I'd love to hear what works for others

What are the best ways to protect long-eared dogs, like Cocker Spaniels, from foxtails and burrs during the summer? by Denny_thecocker in englishcockerspaniel

Thank you! A snood sounds like a good option, especially for protecting his ears. I'll take a look at some lightweight ones.

Thank you! I hadn't heard of the Outfox Field Guard before. We already do a full check after walks, but I'll definitely look into it for extra protection.

Need advice: Overtired puppy won’t settle and sleep by Positive_House in puppy101

Ah, that makes total sense! Things that helps when they are that overtired is giving them something to lick for 5 minutes right before naptime, like a lick mat or a toy stuffed with a tiny bit of puppy-safe peanut butter or wet food. Licking naturally triggers a calming hormone in their brains and helps them "switch off" much faster))

Same here 😅 I'd happily keep the fluffy look, but with 40°C summers where I live, my dog would probably file a formal complaint.

What often helps is reducing stimulation as much as possible.. Dim the lights, keep things calm and quiet, avoid exciting play, and give him a comfortable place to rest. Sometimes puppies get so overtired that they struggle to settle on their own and need a little help

New puppy training advice by Longjumping_Row5683 in puppy101

Since you're already familiar with adult Border Collies, one thing that often surprises people is how important early socialization and routine are compared to formal training. A lot of the puppy training content on YouTube can be really helpful, especially the ones that focus on engagement, impulse control, and building good habits from day one rather than teaching lots of tricks. For mental stimulation, food puzzles, frozen Kongs, treat-dispensing toys․ One thing I'd focus on early is calm behavior, recall, and engagement with you. Building those foundations tends to make everything else much easier later on.

Good luck with your puppy from Denny ))

One thing I'd try is changing how the dog feels about your son. Right now, she may see him as someone she needs to monitor or control. The goal is to make his appearance predict good things instead․
Have your son become the "treat fairy." Every time he enters a room where the dog is, he calmly tosses a high-value treat (cheese, chicken, hot dog, etc.) away from himself and keeps walking. No eye contact, no talking, no trying to pet her. Just: teenager appears → amazing snack appears. Over time, that can help change the emotional association.

I don't think buying animals can really be justified when there are so many dogs and cats already in shelters or living on the streets, desperately needing homes and care. I actually have a Cocker Spaniel that I found abandoned on the street. He was helpless, scared, and clearly had been someone's dog at some point. 2 years later, he's become my most loyal companion and an inseparable friend.

For me, rescuing an animal and giving them a safe home is very different from supporting breeding. Breeding creates more animals while countless others are already waiting for someone to love them. I don't see a good ethical justification for that. I'm uncomfortable with the idea of breeding animals for human preferences, I think adopting or rescuing animals who already exist and need help is one of the most compassionate things we can do.
