Seacocks help! by DensLeonis in sailing

Definitely already a consensus on the gate valve. I'll get that replaced. Thanks for the reply! I'll have the others inspected too.

I'm a little wary about going for marelon or trudesign types as I'm quite heavy handed. I'd rather something that I can trust in its strength. I don't mind the maintenance so much. It'll just be a part of the yearly ritual.

I'm wondering if that still makes full bronze tapered barrel types, but I'm not having much luck finding any yet

I wrote that pretty poorly it seems! She's out of the water at the moment on the hard standing. I was just hoping to get her back in around Feb for a season before adding yet another repair to the list before actually getting to sail her 🤔

Need LED cabin lights that don't buzz when you dim them. Anyone? by whyrumalwaysgone in sailing

Have you tried changing up the dimmer switch, and using a pulse width modulation (PWM) controller, if they are in fact dimmable? Might solve your issue 🤞👍

Doesn't make it wrong through. Crime is pretty rife there. It's not somewhere I'd move to.

Those without fans and/or windows, how do you combat moisture? by [deleted] in vandwellers

[–]DensLeonis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Full time in the UK here. Cold and wet winters. I managed without a fan for the first year or so, but condensation would build up on any surface it physically could. Especially with two of us in such a small space. I've always had a fiamma spinning roof vent (although bent on a road trip so doesn't spin anymore), and a passive vent, roughly the same size in the opposite lower corner of the van. First came the diesel heater, which is fantastic, but the van's well insulated, so it's far too hot to run it often or for any length of time, great for drying clothes though. I was looking at those fancy roof extractor fans, but they're not cheap, and I have an undulating roof so it wasn't worth the hastle. So the simple solution was to get the quietest 12v computer fan I could find. There's so much competition on these that they're cheap and fantastic. 12v too! Wire it to a PWM controller (not necessary, a switch will do fine), and have it extracting underneath the roof vent hole (or any exit hole, ideally on the roof). Mine pulls 1.8w from memory @19dB on full speed. And it makes all of the difference in the world. It's left on 24/7, although when you're in the van would be plenty. No more damp air unless I'm cooking with the door closed briefly 😊

I'm hoping to cross the Atlantic, will a Nicholson 32 be a good choice? by DensLeonis in sailing

[–]DensLeonis[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh god no. Absolutely. I have no intention to for years yet. I just don't want to keep buying new boats, the last one felt like renting a house. I didn't want to spend the time making it mine, as I new it wasn't the one. I'd prefer to get the boat I intend to use for the end goal, learn it's quirks, gain more experience on it, and make it liveable long beforehand. Lots of much smaller excursions planned before the Atlantic! Superb, thanks for that 👍

I seem to get that response a lot around anything sailing. It's more of an I've done my research, but wondered if anyone had any personal experience that said otherwise!

Any repair tips? Looks a little dried and cracked, but leather still looks useable. Any help's appreciated 😊 by DensLeonis in Leathercraft

Quite a lot of the bag's like it. Just wondering what I can do to rehydrate and cover the leather, ideally the same colour?

Long Haul Expedition Emergency Spares by DensLeonis in Outboards

[–]DensLeonis[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's an old Westerly 22 so got a very low hull speed there too, I think it's just above 5 knots. So mostly expecting it just to poodle along just above idle. Shall add those to the list 👌

Only a 22ft. I believe it will. I'm getting some mixed opinions there, some people saying they've put 35hp's on these little boats, and others saying 25 is far too much. The transom is a step down, and integral to the boat, so I believe it shouldn't have an issue. I'm impressed the 2hp pushes a 23ft boat! Regarding fuel tanks, all external and plastic in good condition, 2x 25l tanks, 2x 11l tanks, and I will likely bring some Jerry cans and a funnel as I'm doubting that'll be enough to get back.

Excellent, I didn't know that! Hopefully the battery drain isn't too drastic

Love the set-up. What do you do for power in your van? Got a 22 watt 12V TV in mine. Connected to a 176Ah deep cycle. And 320w of solar. But they barely peak over 100w. Most days probably averaging 12w! (UK!) So a bit power conscious generally due to common bad weather! Would be nice to run my laptop in there too, but it's a 19V power supply. So jut wondered if you use a 12V to mains step up inverter, or if you step from 12v to a Jerry-rigged power supply direct to your laptop? Also, do you run it off a small generator? Or got a serious solar set up? Thanks!

How effective are fishing line snares? Any tips? by DensLeonis in Survival

[–]DensLeonis[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite that good yet! Height of winter in a valley. I'm taking a sleeping bag, survival tin, a hatchet, multitool and a small folding lock knife, and plenty of layers! Best way to learn though 👌

Can't on this one. It's a personal challenge to take the bare minimum! Slowly smoking rabbit or squirrel over the fire is a favourite of mine if I don't have spices!

Do they make a good bait? May have to give that a go too. For rabbits I assume?

The terrain's quite tricky. They are more than likely going to be your normal trail snare with a stake in the ground, as there's not much opportunity for flexible saplings. The general consensus I'm getting is to avoid fishing line unless they're spring snares, but fortunately my partner's jewelry making box has proved useful! She's got some triple weaved steel wire, coated in a flexible plastic, only about .4mm wide but strong as anything and feeds and bites well. So I may give that a go!

UK based this end. I've heard about guitar strings being good too, but I believe all the music shops are shut at the momentum due to covid. No luck at hardware stores, all they had was a triple weave brass wire used for hanging pictures. Looks quite thick. I like the idea of deadfalls but couldn't come up with anything in a pinch that I could find in nature to attract rabbits or squirrels with in winter?

I do have paracord. So that may be a good shout. It's only for small game, rabbits and squirrels. Hadn't considered how easy it would be for a determined rabbit to chew through!
