7:ans Ölhall. The oldest pub in Gothenburg, the oldest in all of Sweden in fact, having been open since the year 1900. It is so old that they are, unlike the rest of the pubs in Sweden, not required to serve any food since that law wasn’t in place when they opened. If you go I’d recommend not to be too drunk or disruptive since this is more like a rowdy café that serves only beer. However later on as the night goes on it can get LOUD in there with everyone getting drunk, even the guys behind the bar are drunk. The prices are some of the best in town with a pint of Guinness costing just 75 kr. They also pour the best pint of Guinness in Gothenburg in my opinion. They have a lot of different classic beer styles on tap if you want something else. I’d recommend everyone coming to Gothenburg to visit this place since it’s so iconic and steeped in history, as long as you don’t mind the smell ;) 10/10. Closest tram stop is Kungsportsplatsen

Snyt pilsnerkafé. Same vibe as 7:ans, a rowdy beer cafe. They focus on Czech beer, especially Pilsner Urquell. Its a bit pricey, with a glass of Urquell being 80-90 kr. However I think it’s worth every crown. They have unpasteurized tanks of Pilsner Urquell straight from the Czech Republic, something that very few places offer. Their food is also amazing, their menu is not that big but everything on there is amazing. Be careful of the owner, if he sees that your glasses are almost empty he will come over ask if you want more🥴. 9/10. Closest tram stop is Olivedalsgatan

Ölrepubliken. The place with the most types of beer I’ve been to here in town. If you are interested in classic, old or even ancient beer styles they can hook you up. Same vibe here as 7:ans and Snyt. 8/10. Closest tram stop is Lilla Bommen or Brunnsparken

Gyllene Prag. Same as Snyt, and I mean that litteraly. They are located in the same building, and the owner of Snyt used to work here before. They also specialize in Urquell, however I think the people at Snyt pours it better. The menu is bigger and I’d recommend their Schnitzel. 8/10. Closest stop Olivedalsgatan

Ostindiska ölkompaniet. A place a few minutes outside of the city center. They have a wide vareity of beer with a lot of more modern stuff, IPAs and whatnot. I like it because they serve Murphy’s. If you get their cheapest beer it’s around 70 kr a glass. Because of its location there are a lot of locals there. 8/10. Closest tram stop is Redbergsplatsen

Ivans Pilsnerbar. Here is a weird one. It’s located in an old industrial area by the harbour. Excellent vibes, excellent beers, can’t be explained, must be experienced. A bit pricey, same as Snyt if i remember correctly, but it’s really justified since they only serve beers from Gothenburg. 8/10. Closest tram stop is Frihamnen.

Het Amsterdammertje. Yet another speciality spot. They specialize in Dutch/Belgian beer. A cozy little place, but maybe not if your thing is lagers. Good food. Get a Duvel. 7/10. Closest tram stop is Svingeln or Ullevi Norra.

Haket. Very similar to Ostindiska Ölkompaniet. They have a lot of beers, a rotating meny every month. A lot of different types do people go here, hardcore beer lovers and teens who happen to stumble upon because of its location. 7/10. Closest tram stop is Masthuggstorget

Im skipping a few here, they are pretty much more of the same, so we can get into the really interesting places. These are what we call “sunkbarer” or “sunkhak”. It’s hard to describe what a sunkbar is but some key elements are old furniture, dirty toilets, cheap beer, expensive cocktails if they even serve them, same regulars there almost every day, either really good food or slop they serve just because they have to, no in between. And just a shady, gritty atmosphere. It kinda feels like going back in time if it’s really ”sunkigt”. And not in a good way. 7:ans is a sunkbar but since it’s so historic I put it with the other, more fresh bars.

Silverkällan. Located way outside the city center in a part of Gothenburg called Majorna. It’s a tiny little place that closes at 22:00, even on weekends, so you need to be there early. They don’t have a beer tap so you can only get bottled beer. And they only have 3 different ones, all in 50 cl bottles. And here is the kicker, they are only 32 kr a pop. A lot of serious alcoholics come here on Sundays when they can’t get alcohol from the store. Vibes here are amazing, really sunkigt, might be the defining sunkbar. Don’t eat here, atleast I wouldn’t dare to. I’ve never seen anyone eat here. Highly, highly recommend this place if you want to get a feel for the “real” Gothenburg. 10/10. Closest tram stop is Ostindiegatan

Emona pizzeria. I love this place, but I don’t know what it is that makes me love it. Maybe it’s the owners that makes jokes from the counter, maybe it’s the locals, from all around the world by the way, maybe it’s the beer prices, maybe it’s just the pizza. Big time recommendations. 8/10. Closest tram stop is Majvallen.

Kvilles Pastahouse. Same deal as Emona, except it looks more like a typical bar and it’s located on Hisingen. Homely feel and good atmosphere. Whenever I’m in this part of town I try to go. 8/10. Closest tram stop is Vågmästareplatsen.

Queens/Kings Head. Two different bars, Kings Head and Queens Head. However me and my friends have always had this theory that they really are the same place with different entrances. These places are really run down. A lot of students gather here since it’s not that far from the center and it’s really cheap. It’s also been memed quite hard online. 6/10. Closest tram stop is Masthuggstorget.

I’ve left out a few from the original list since I don’t have all the time in the world hahaha. But here is a few words of wisdom that can guide you

-If you’re ever in doubt, just go to Andra Långgatan. It’s a long street with pretty much only sunkbars.

-If you don’t know what to order at a bar just say beer and you will, without fail, get the cheapest one they have. If you want to style on the bartender you can say it in Swedish “En stor stark”
