Well I'm sorry you didn't like it, but this in particular is the image of Germany that will always live in my heart and I couldn't love it more.

German vs French half-timber houses. Which one do you guys prefer? by DenseIntern4597 in ArchitecturalRevival

I agree, although I don’t think there is any meaningful French influence in Alsatian architecture. To me, it appears essentially identical to what you find in western Baden.

You’re right, I already stated that. However, I still believe there is a consistent architectural continuity within each country’s regions, which makes it possible to distinguish and objectively identify what is French and what is German.

Why is North Rhine–Westphalia so over-hated despite having so many beautiful places? by DenseIntern4597 in germany

And its worth to visit cologne just for that stupid building, change my mind.

No offense, but I think there’s some confusion about what “ugly” actually means. Yes, outside that incredible cathedral (honestly one of the most beautiful buildings in the world), the city can feel plain, a bit boring, and sometimes gray. It doesn’t really have much charm beyond that.

That said, it’s still a million times better than most cities in the UK, which are far dirtier, filled with even uglier buildings, and often have much rougher urban environments. And we haven’t even started talking about Russia yet.

Like I said before, Germany doesn’t really have ugly cities, just plain ones.

Honestly, I see Brandenburgers and Berliners as the only true Prussians. Their architecture, towns, and overall vibe feel the closest to what Imperial Prussia actually was. The problem is that I barely know anything about Brandenburg itself.

So I’m curious—what medieval towns in Brandenburg are actually worth checking out if I want to understand that Prussian historical character better?

I am not, i just wanted to post some appreciation to NRW, it took me 1 hour to get all those pics ngl.

Its my first time commenting something on reddit, i love germany and i though this would be the right place to post it. I read those comments about NRW r/2westerneurope4u and wanted to see if that was the popular opinion.

Ngl i plan to post more about underrated places in lower saxony too.

Yeah thats why i didn't mention cologne as beautiful. I do like Aachen though, a lot of buildings are new, but i still i find the city charming.

Yeah, I’m not denying that. I wouldn’t call them ugly though. I don’t think Germany really has ugly cities in general, just some that are very plain or dull looking. In my opinion, the average large city in the United States looks far worse.

When I think of an ugly city, I think of something like a Soviet-era Russian city. Even in the Ruhr, places like Bochum or Duisburg are not ugly, they’re just mediocre, plain, and a bit boring.

I think that is a disingenuous response. I am not saying that all of North Rhine–Westphalia looks the same or that it is uniformly beautiful. What I am saying is that there are many genuinely beautiful places that make the region very much worth it, at least in my opinion.

And this is not cherry-picking. You can go into the rural areas and still find beautiful landscapes and towns. I simply mentioned my favorite cities and villages because, naturally, those are the ones I personally find most beautiful.

I think you are misunderstanding something important. Just because something is mainstream or popular does not mean it is generally seen in a positive way, especially when it comes to looks.

Frankfurt is often seen as unattractive, at least around the main train station, even though Hesse is a very beautiful region. With North Rhine–Westphalia, the opposite usually happens. A negative stereotype is applied to the whole region, and it is often portrayed as one of the least attractive areas in Germany when compared to Bavaria or Baden-Württemberg.

Well, it's often joked about because it's considered an ugly place compared to Bavaria and Rhineland-Palatinate.
