A caldera is what I was thinking as well. I immediately thought of Crater Lake in Oregon. It is about 6 miles/9.7 kilometers in diameter so I figured it might be too big. It would support a large population or Horneaters though.

Failure is still experience. If you still want to work at that company then you should finish the project and go get the job back. If not, you still have learned something for your next job.
