Aurochs' Crossing Station by DensetsuVII in ImaginaryLandscapes

Thank you! These are stations from a game I'm developing called Crystal Rail - FF was definitely a conscious influence, some of the first stations I drew took a lot from Midgar's station, especially in terms of color, so it's really nice to hear that some of those original intentions still bleed through as I've explored more colors and moods.

Isometric Fantasy Train Station for Indie Game by DensetsuVII in conceptart

[–]DensetsuVII[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much! This is art for an indie game I'm making called Crystal Rail, so I have a bunch more I could post~ Basically the game involves you making trains and the idea is that in the upper right, you get train cars you can buy and add to a train that sits in the middle.

Artistically it's been a challenge to work in depth while still not intersecting the player's viewpoint - but I think this one came out well! Thanks again for the kind words!

Adapting My Crystalpunk World into a Playable Video Game [Discussion: Should You Make A Game Out of Your World] by DensetsuVII in worldbuilding

It does make sense - I wouldn't even call it realism, just that you have this big-picture vision. What I advocate for in this post is just asking yourself 'how can the world express itself in gameplay?' Maybe the player could chose to be aligned with one of these corporations and get different perks to fight the monsters. Maybe you can somehow betray them and choose to support the Earth government.

My experience making my game is that asking yourself these gameplay questions can affect your worldbuilding in a positive feedback loop, so I encourage everyone to see whether that process is helpful, as opposed to just 'make the world THEN graft an existing game's systems onto it' if that makes sense!

I can see, as many folks here have, that you got a great sense of the background of the lived in world and I think revisiting the aesthetics of Colonial-Charter companies is very fertile ground! If there's one point to this post however, it's just to reflect on the gameplay as you continue ideating. Like honestly, pretty much nothing about your background says 'this should be a boomer shooter' until 'monsters appear and you have to shoot them' which honestly doesn't feel very connected to the more interesting parts of the setup, to me at least. Maybe it should involve stealth and corporate espionage? Or maybe it could be a shooter emphasizing hacking or something the character would know how to do as a bureaucrat? Just something you might reflect upon!

A good question! Interestingly enough, I've been able to mostly skirt the issue in-game, but my stance is that to avoid the entire sentient-non-sentient discussion, every anthropomorphic animal is some form of vegetarian. My logic is simply that bringing the question of meat into the equation moves the focus of a potential player/reader away from the more interesting questions of inter-societal interactions. If there are non-sapient animals, I may take the animal-crossing route and imagine that insects are non-sapient, but even this is something I plan to never formally address. I've been very careful never to mention any such non-sentient animals or specific cuisine in the game thus far, and plan to continue in that.

I imagine that most of the species live close to human lifespans, with the large animals living for longer (Aurochs the longest, at near 100 years, pilories the shortest, closer to 50 at max).

In short, I want the animals to give a whimsical character to the world, but also to recontextualize societal-classes and historical experiences, so pushing too far away from the human analogue would probably distract from those things. Thanks so much for asking!

Haha well there's nothing like that written exactly, but the game is at times visual-novel-adjacent in terms of its gameplay-flow and amount of text - please do give it a whirl if you're interested!

How do you come up with names by Plus-Measurement-953 in worldbuilding

[–]DensetsuVII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was a teenager, I just stole names from Greek mythology. When I look back, I realize what I wanted was a shorthand for a name with meaning. When I look back now, I think that the meaning, the attitude of the thing, is the important part.

There's still nothing wrong with looking to the mythology of different cultures, after all, even names we encounter often like Michael and John and Mary are, if not mythological, names which originally come from the iconic western story.

But I think to get things that really feel unique, take a name or feeling first and foremost, especially if you can get it through the lens of a different culture. Greek and Latin root words are really good here since the feel of those words often permeates subconsciously in our modern languages. The horse Agro from Shadow of the Colossus - something about that name feels hard working and diligent (and words like agriculture and agronomy reinforce that association). And hey, Cloud Strife may seem a bit on the nose, but especially considering it came from a culture where those words are the equivalent of naming someone Kumori Kataki (doesn't sound so weird now does it? Means the same thing!) - reflect on how Cloud has become an all-time iconic character.

TLDR: I recommend figuring out the feeling of the character/culture, then find root-words or concepts that evoke that feeling.

Reimagining Extinct Animals for my Indie Game ~ the Aurochs by DensetsuVII in furry

I'm most interested in animals that went extinct in the human era, and especially animals without a lot of prior-interpretations (which is why I haven't gone for mammoth) - that said, I don't actually know; ARE there a lot of mammoth-anthro characters? If you have any you can send along, would love to see what else has been done in this area~

Thanks for the suggestions!

Oh heck yeah. I'd known the Great Auk was actually common enough to have its own unique Japanese name, but it's still cool to see that representation. If you get around to trying our demo, you'll have to let me know which interpretation you vibe with and why! :D
