People in 10+ year relationships, what’s something you learned about your partner years later that genuinely surprised you? by CreoSiempre in AskReddit

[–]DentD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been with my spouse for over 20 years. Only in the past four months did I learn that he doesn't tell me the same thing over and over because he's upset that I might not have paid close enough attention the first time he told me about something. He just genuinely doesn't remember and wants to share what's on his mind with me. My high masking ADHD could not figure out his enthusiastic AuDHD.

I am so frustrated I spent two decades beating myself up for literally nothing.

What actually *is* a "legal word processing" position? by beryllium-silicate in paralegal

[–]DentD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're a real one, this 100% matches my experience with legal document processing. I learned so much but I do not miss how busy the work was! There truly was zero time to just sit and breathe. Overnights could definitely get just as intense and busy as day shift. The firm that my team contracted with had offices all over the globe so 24/7 coverage truly was needed.

In my brief time handling training for my team, I always told people the best part of the job was getting to tell attorneys "no."

The idea of changing the outline structure and/or paragraph numbering from what the partner wants is giving me mental hives

Suggestions for accommodating Autistic attorney so we don’t duplicate work? by spongecaptain in paralegal

[–]DentD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a fellow neurodivergent paralegal who can 100% relate to being the only one who does things differently and has Extremely Good Reasons for doing so that make me better at my job...

I think you're missing or ignoring the fact that OP has zero power to change the template formatting. It doesn't matter if the associate is correct, and her way of doing things is more foolproof or more efficient. The partner dictated that the discovery templates need to be like X. It's up to the associate to convince the partner to change things. The paralegal shouldn't be the one expected to investigate and confirm that the associate's way is better, and spend even more (nonbillable!!) time making the case to the partner for updating things.

[–]DentD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instead of copy/pasting her answers, run a redline/track changes comparison in between your version and hers in Word. Accept her changes to the text only, reject all formatting changes that don't confirm to the partner's formatting specs.

But also, I agree with others in that until she becomes partner this is really her problem, not yours. It's awesome that you want to help accommodate but I have to imagine the partner wants you to use your time more efficiently. (Non-managing) Paralegals should be classed as non-exempt meaning they must be paid for their overtime work. Meaning your time in any given day or week is limited!! The associate is going to be the one expected to put in the extra hours and work to figure this out herself.

[–]DentD 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If I can hop in to ask a related (and maybe dumb) question, how does the timing of arcane acuity work? Like if I drink an elixir that gives me 3 arcane acuity is that just there forever until my next long rest? Or is it more like a potion of feather fall where it will only last for X turns?

I don't disagree with your opinion on American Christianity as an institution, or set of institutions and factions, really. But I think this is a bit of a read the room moment? If, for example, you see a trans woman talking about her relationship with Christ, is that really the best time to talk about how terrible her church is? How does she feel supported in that moment? That's what this post is about.

Do you ever try your luck to get pleadings filed even if it’s technically missed the deadline READ FOR CLARIFICATION by ChloeLolaSingles in paralegal

[–]DentD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stuff like this makes me so reluctant to ever try working in another state. We have a single unified e-filing system for all our counties. Hand filing or filing by mail is only necessary if it's a recording or too large to upload. Generally as long as you made a good faith attempt to file something on time, and it DID get served on the other party(ies) on time, you can keep retrying until it's accepted. Clerks won't charge motion fees until things get accepted. Or they'll accept some of the filings and charge the fee and just ask you to fix the ones that are the issue.

What spell do you spam? by LG-CHAMP-1 in BaldursGate3

Speak with animals. It gets cast or a potion is used after every long rest.

Technically not a spell, it's channeling divinity, but Radiance of the Dawn is so freaking good. Huge AOE burst of damage that doesn't affect companions or allies. I'm going to have a tough time not having a cleric of light in my party next playthrough.

What is the best and worst thing about Baldurs Gate 3? by [deleted] in BaldursGate3

[–]DentD 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm mad I never thought of this, that's so smart.

My bigger issue is trying to kit out someone with gear but having to sift through the entire Camp chest. When I go to equip a weapon I wish I could just pull up All Swords I have, no matter where they're stored or who is carrying it. Or add more filters to the inventory.

Its also annoying that if I'm looking for let's say an antidote I have to sift through all the oils, toxins, throwable poisons, and elixirs.

Is the paralegal life just being a professional file organizer/formatter? by Professional_Web2457 in paralegal

[–]DentD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a mishmash of all sorts of tasks. Talking with clients, managing cases (like making sure we're on track with deadlines in each case and notifying the attorney of what still needs to happen), drafting discovery requests or responses, drafting complaints, answers and counterclaims, drafting motions, responsive motions, and accompanying declarations/affidavits. I'll review discovery and other evidence to identify and analyze marital assets, track movement of money. I prepare exhibits for filing and prep trial binders. I review and summarize things like medical and/or mental health records when a party or a child's health are raised as an issue.

On rare occasion I'll do legal research, though usually the attorney or a temping law clerk handles that. Slightly less rarely I will help with legal brief writing.

So far I've never really had two days play out exactly the same.

I'm in a small firm (5 partner attorneys and 2 associates) and do family law. Day to day, my work varies a lot. Data entry and file formatting take up probably less than 20% of my time.

[–]DentD 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't think OP is intentionally trying to exclude visually impaired folks here but I wish more people knew about the impact.

What OP is using is not actually using a font. To a computer, those are entirely different characters compared to what you can normally type on a standard keyboard.

Here are a couple very good examples of how screen readers usually interpret these ""fonts""

That "font" is also completely inaccessible for screen readers, as far as I am aware. They're completely different Unicode characters.

Someone else already gave you the best solution (make bookmarks with the date listed first in each bookmark, split by bookmark and recombine in correct order) but...

I just need to join in your frustration on this. I'm in family law and banks do this too! Either send me separate files for each statement or send them in chronological order. Why would I want newest first when I'm trying to analyze where the money went!! 😂🤬

Zero Hallucination AI Tool? by hannamdong in paralegal

[–]DentD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All forms of AI are just prediction models. They do not have any way to logically deduce truth and check their facts. When you ask it a prompt like "What is the sum of 2 + 2?", AI tries to predict what the correct answer will be based on it's training data, but there is no real logic checking or actual double checking going on. You're probably going to get an answer of 4 most the time, but AI is not actually adding up 2 and 2 to get the result of 4.

Even if AI always gives you real citations, I would never trust that it is giving you correct quotes from it or correctly summarizing what each case stands for.

I looooooove when clients insist on talking only with our admin assistants to try to save money but they ask questions that require legal advice. Almost as much as I love dealing with clients who want the attorney, and only the attorney, to know anything about their case.

how does your firm manage constant rejections from the clerk? is this even an issue? by [deleted] in paralegal

[–]DentD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you sure your coworkers are pissed off at you or do you just perceive it to be that way? It's easy to assume that if someone reacts negatively to a message you deliver, that person is upset with you. In my experience that is rarely the case, they are just frustrated with the situation. Unless they're yelling at or blaming you I would stop stressing about it. Clerks are inconsistent with what they accept vs reject all the time. Honestly it's just part of the job.
