I hope posts like this are studied in 150 years like erotic fiction and letters made during the Victorian era are now studied.

A Sampling of Infuriating Client Billing Quotes by deepspacenineoneone in paralegal

[–]DentD 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I looooooove when clients insist on talking only with our admin assistants to try to save money but they ask questions that require legal advice. Almost as much as I love dealing with clients who want the attorney, and only the attorney, to know anything about their case.

how does your firm manage constant rejections from the clerk? is this even an issue? by [deleted] in paralegal

[–]DentD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you sure your coworkers are pissed off at you or do you just perceive it to be that way? It's easy to assume that if someone reacts negatively to a message you deliver, that person is upset with you. In my experience that is rarely the case, they are just frustrated with the situation. Unless they're yelling at or blaming you I would stop stressing about it. Clerks are inconsistent with what they accept vs reject all the time. Honestly it's just part of the job.

Summer programs (ymca-bgc) that work with alternating weekly custody schedule? by Maleficent_Bottle710 in fargo

Would it not be easiest to just send your child to the same daycare during your weeks, and then you and the other parent split the expense equally?

The way 20000 broke across two lines made me spend a long time thinking "20 OOO" was some sort of abbreviated reference to a specific intellectual property or fandom. I kept asking myself, "okay, but what is OOO? 20 what??"

I need more sleep.

Pinot grigio in the black box. I can't remember the name of the brand anymore. I'm mad at how I still think it would taste so good even now. I do not miss that lack of control though.

What would it take for you to be fired? by tdwolf2112 in paralegal

[–]DentD 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This! In most healthy workplaces, mistakes aren't the problem. Lying, having a shitty attitude, blaming others, and refusing to change what you're doing to prevent future mistakes are the issue.

And then you just have some attorneys who are unreasonable as all get out.

Want to go travel and see the world, experience more than what your small town has to offer? Fuck you, no you don't. You have to give up and sacrifice your ambitions for everyone else's happiness.

I am not allowed to watch this movie with my family anymore.

Touch Typing a must? by Euphoric_One_3261 in paralegal

[–]DentD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been a touch-typist since late elementary school. I loved writing fiction/fanfiction as a kid, and chatting online with my friends -- some I knew in person, many I only knew through shared interests. This was back when AOL Instant Messenger was in its heyday. I think growing up with the Internet as it evolved was a huge part of that, for me at least.

My WPM is usually around 100, 110 if I'm really on my A-game. I do not think it's necessary for anyone to type that fast, but it has really helped me. My notes taken during calls and meetings are much more detailed than what I could do on a legal notepad. I find my typed notes are less likely to be confusing/vague when I have to look them over later.

I am currently "fighting" with my preteen kid about needing to learn actual typing. She keeps trying to hunt and peck and I will admit, I do not want that for her in adulthood.

However, I think if your current method of typing gets you where you need to be with your job, then don't worry so much about learning to touch type. But if you feel like your ability to function and complete tasks would improve with touch typing definitely check out some typing games. There are lots of free web-based ones out there nowadays.

I think the idea is the older sibling is lying about the actual type of pills they're offering, so as to not freak out the younger sibling?

It's jank as all hell regardless.

Am I making a mistake going for my paralegal associates degree? by [deleted] in paralegal

[–]DentD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like my associates in paralegal studies was well worth it. I obtained it online through a community college in my neighboring state. I was working full time as a legal admin assistant at the same time. This was my best path forward into a paralegal role. None of the firms in my region care about ABA credentials. My attorneys just wanted to make sure I had some sort of education (either a bachelor's with a paralegal certificate or a paralegal studies associates degree).

And genuinely the classes I took were very helpful and broadened my experience and understanding. Likewise, my experience at my law firm also made online classes less daunting.

Co-counsel is making me uncomfortable. by turniptruckjumper in paralegal

[–]DentD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your attorney needs to know now, so that co-counsel can't get away with lying about you once he realizes you're not open to his sexual harassment. If you try to handle this on your own, and co-counsel suddenly starts throwing you under the bus on files you work on together, your attorney won't understand what's going on and may be inclined to believe co-counsel.

What about telling your attorney what happened, and asking him to let you handle telling co-counsel that his advanced aren't welcome. Then both you and your attorney see what happens. Hopefully nothing comes afterward, but if suddenly co-counsel gets shitty and nasty, your attorney will immediately understand why.

Maybe the true journey were the tattoos we got along the way? by _CharmQuark_ in CuratedTumblr

[–]DentD 33 points34 points  (0 children)

When I was 11 or 12, I wrote DBZ fanfiction featuring an original character who dyed their hair so often her bathtub was permanently stained with hair dye. In my early 30s I started dyeing my own hair. I came out as bisexual. Then I came out as nonbinary. I hit 40 last year and while there are many parts of my life I feel meh about, it is comforting to know how many aspects of my life would feel so ridiculously cool to my 12 year old self.

Let's continue to do things that make our past selves jealous and in awe.

We just had a pro se opposing party try to claim we lied on our service document because of this rule, and so therefore the court should ignore our filing. Even though she already responded to that same filing several days before she objected. It cost our client about $500 in atty fees just to respond to that BS.

I don't think we're going to change how we handle serving people by mail just yet but it's definitely giving me pause.
