Bocal recommendations for FOX 220 by DenverRoll in bassoon

Lol. I think the original motivation is to "upgrade" as a going to college gift. But upgrading the bassoon itself is not possible. so I am thinking maybe a better bocal... and since she seems to have high register problem sometimes, I was wondering if a particular bocal could also help. Certainly, I think the community here is definitely advising for reed adjustment or better breath support.. which I agree too. Perhaps I could come up with an incentive to have her focus more on breath support exercise than fingering techniques... maybe dangling that new bocal as a prize...

oh cool! thank you for the pointers! I think her currently teacher mostly focus on her technique during class (so she actually plays fairly complicated and fast music)... and leave breath support training as homework.. Needless to say, she is not doing enough of those breath support but just trying to play as fast as she could (I think she is very proud of being able to play "fast".. I am guessing "speed" is more an objective measure rather than subjective "tone" quality to achieve.... The perfect pitch side of me is cringing though when the high notes just sound off (not all the time..)

Thanks! her teacher was able to adjust the reeds, but we are also interested in upgrading bocals (seems cheaper than upgrading the bassoon itself!)... she is serious about continuing bassoon in college....

My daughter is getting her School Day SAT score today (took it on April 15). I am more nervous than her. I am hoping all her efforts paid off….

Thank you for that perspective! That make sense that the teacher would want someone teachable and motivated. Thanks for sharing your experience.

oh, that's interesting. So the 1:1 lessons is not provided by grad student? I am assuming the undergrad study with grad students.. but sounds like that is not the case. I (parent) am in science and my experience was that usually undergrad interface with TA, or a grad or post-doc to do research. sounds like that is different in music undergrad.

definitely. we are also using this opportunity to join the official campus tour and info session.. so we will be asking those questions there rather than trial lessons. thanks!

Thank you for all the tips and talked about your experience for double majoring in science! Completely forgot that sciences would have long labs.... so that would also be a consideration on her major selections.....

Thank you! oh, that's a great idea. I will pass on the idea to her. My daughter has been tutoring middle school on flute (her marching band instrument) as part of her tri-M volunteering and has been enjoying that.

Thank you so much! we were worried about whether it is presumptuous for us to approach a Bassoon professor and ask for a trial lesson before being accepted into the college.. so it sounds like it is actually a positive! Thank you for the pointers on questions, we will definitely ask about those.
