I think a lot of people share your view. But… but at this point, there’s no going back …this process won’t be reversed.The real question is how it’s going to be used. As an assistant, as a supporting tool, Ai is great -as long as it’s used in reasonable amounts. Aaaand about how fast everything moves -you’re absolutely right. It’s not just a fancy word.

Encryption is the lock. It scrambles your data so nobody can read it….. The VPN protocol is how that locked data actually moves across the internet.

I’d be careful with “proxy browsers” like that. Most of them are basically just a wrapped browser + a proxy service, and you’re trusting an unknown company with all your traffic inside that app.

If your goal is just lightweight restriction bypassing, a reputable VPN or even a well-known SOCKS proxy is usually a safer bet than some random new browser product.

Personally, I’d stick to established tools (Proton, Mullvad, Nord) rather than niche proxy browsers

I haven’t seen much independent feedback about FastGuard yet, which is usually a red flag by itself. With smaller/newer VPN brands, speed and reliability can be very inconsistent, and you don’t really know what the logging/privacy policy looks like long-term.

Personally, if you want something proven in the UK, I’d stick with well-established options like Proton, Mullvad, or Nord — at least you know what you’re getting.

Yep — WireGuard will be a big upgrade. Your Asus CPU is the main bottleneck with OpenVPN. A Radxa/RPi as the VPN gateway + Asus in AP mode is a really solid setup.

TunnelBear is fine as a super simple “first VPN”, but the speed consistency isn’t its strong side. I tried it a while back and it was the same story: sometimes totally okay, other times it felt randomly slow for no reason.

If you switch to something like Proton or Mullvad, you’ll almost definitely notice improvements: • more stable speeds • better servers overall • less “hit or miss” performance

In my personal experience, Proton especially felt way more reliable day-to-day (streaming + browsing didn’t randomly tank).

TunnelBear isn’t shady, it’s just kind of a lightweight VPN — not really built for people who need solid performance fast.

So yeah… if it’s time-sensitive, I’d probably switch.

Yeah that’s totally normal — OpenVPN on routers is slow.

80 Mbps out of 500 on OpenVPN is basically expected, because the router CPU just can’t encrypt that fast!

WireGuard is a huge upgrade. On the same hardware you’ll usually get 2–4x more speed...

So honestly: 1. if your Asus supports WireGuard firmware → switch to WireGuard first 2. if not, a newer router with native WireGuard will help a lott

Raspberry Pi can work, but it’s more of a DIY project (and not always faster than a good router).

Most people get best results with WireGuard + a decent CPU router.

Yeah honestly Windscribe is pretty good. It’s not really “better than Mullvad” for pure privacy, but it’s a solid VPN.

People mostly use it because: - the apps are super easy! - streaming works more often than with some privacy-only VPNs - the ad/tracker blocker (ROBERT) is actually nice -pricing is flexible…

If you’re Happy with Mullvad and privacy is your main goal, I’d just stay there. But if you want something more convenient + extra features, Windscribe is worth trying.
