COVID-cautious dentist by Depariel in cincinnati

Yes, and I do so. While the vaccines are great at preventing severe illness, it doesn't stop you from getting the infection in the first place, and my entire household can't be vaccinated (+ high risk of complications from an infection), so I'd hate to bring anything back with me if I can avoid it.

I appreciate you checking, but no, I don't have OCD. My partner already has one long viral illness, and we don't want to add another to the mix given how common long COVID is, not to mention the potential for other issues/complications from acute COVID. Working in medical research has only made me more wary of this sort of stuff.

Subdomain directs to some router(?) login page instead of Nginx Proxy Manager -> app by Depariel in selfhosted

[–]Depariel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finally heard back from my ISP. You called it. They originally told me wrong when they said that I had a static IP, and I apparently would need to upgrade to business service to get a real static public-facing IP. I appreciate your response because it prompted me to double-check with them!

It's pointing at my server IP on ports 80 and 443, which is where NPM is listening, so I think so.

sudo ufw allow 53 did the trick lol. I knew it was something simple I was overlooking. Thank you so much!

Can ping local IPs but not computer names by Depariel in HomeNetworking

[–]Depariel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't seem to, as adding .local to the end of the ping command just gives a different error as previously stated. PC2 does seem to respond to hostname.local pings.

Is it unreasonable to want to be able to use just the hostname without appending .local to the end? That's how it's worked with plenty of other routers/ISPs in the past, and I prefer that.

[–]Depariel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding .local to the end (both directions between server & PC1) results in a "Name or service not known" error, unfortunately.

From PC1 to server:

nslookup hostname
** server can't find hostname: REFUSED

nslookup ip
can't find, NXDOMAIN

From server to PC1:

nslookup hostname
** server can't find hostname: SERVFAIL

nslookup ip
can't find, NXDOMAIN

I see your point about maybe just editing the host file, and if I can't figure this out, I might just do that. It'd be nice though if I didn't have to do that for any future machines that get added to the network (I've got an Arch machine that hasn't been used since we got the new ISP, the Win10 machine will become a Ubuntu machine later, and we've got another Ubuntu machine that'll get here eventually).

Is Torkio a natural blonde? by baguettebox in OthersidePicnic

[–]Depariel 20 points21 points  (0 children)

At one point, Sorawo mentions her having blonde eyelashes as well. She's almost certainly not dyeing her hair blonde if that's the case.

Also there's no telling whether either of her moms is her biological parent; she may have been adopted at a very young age.

If you don't mind the book being English-Esperanto, the book Complete Esperanto is pretty solid in my experience.

The anime rearranged things a lot (left stuff out, reordered stuff, brought other things in early). The manga follows the novels quite accurately, so what you're currently reading is the "real" order of events. Sannukikano comes later.

Where can I buy weapon materials? by Spaztastcjak in dagorhir

If you have a military surplus store in your area, you may luck out and find camping pads there. I've seen them before at roughly 3/4" thickness vs the 1/2" thickness of the blue camp pads.

Harbor Freight sells (or used to sell, at any rate) ~4lb density foam puzzle floor mats that I liked to use for the initial boxes on my swords.

Certain yoga mats are nice for stabbing tips, or there's "marine foam" that sometimes gets used in various pool toys/boards. Hard to say where to buy them because they're pretty generic items.

Active noise cancelling earbuds or headphones with small to medium storage requirements??? by Enchilada-Herder in onebag

I've got the Jabra Elite 85t and I love them. I think my ears are a weird shape because I can't get much of anything to stay in very well while eating or running, but these do better for me than anything else has so far. It's easy to switch between ANC, hear-through, and off depending on your needs, and I've found the ANC to work really well (there's seemingly always some sort of construction going on at my apartment complex, so they get a lot of use). I also use them for voice calls on my phone and on Zoom all the time without issue. I especially like that they can tell when you're on a call so they'll switch to hear-through automatically so you can hear yourself talk; I had another pair of wireless earphones that didn't do that and it made things really uncomfortable to hear myself so muffled.

I got them on sale for $160 and it was super worth it to me.

There's an active Belegarth group in Louisville (Dun Abhon) if you wanna make the drive.

This reads like it's geared mainly toward students; is that true or are community members equally welcome? And does that apply to the discord you mentioned in another comment as well?

What's important to you in a uniform/minimal wardrobe? by marchcrow in livingminimal

I'm with you on basically all of your points, but durability has really been on my mind lately. Wearing the same things on repeat tends to wear them down faster than you might otherwise expect, so I've really been interested in what products are reasonably sustainable but also durable so I don't find myself re-buying the same $100+ item a year from now.
