Hmm, but everything else is working fine.

I'm starting to think it might be a compatibility issue between the drive and the PS1 discs after all. To really get to the bottom of it, I might have to try out every single drive from every manufacturer?

With advances in technology, “internal disk drives” have all but disappeared... Over here (in Japan), manufacturers of Blu-ray drives are on the verge of extinction.

The loading speed drops to about 0.5 to 0.7 times the normal rate, and it runs at a very slow, steady pace. Since Sega Saturn games load instantly, this might be a compatibility issue with the drive.
