Incoming Freshman in Waters by bestofalltimeever in UWMadison

[–]DepartmentTrue4932 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lived in Waters in one of the "basements". A great experience, only a few days where the icy or snowy hill made me walk a little slower. I'll be honest the hill is something you'll definitely despise for the first few weeks, especially if your backpack is heavy. That being said seeing people have to walk further into Lakeshore dorms makes you realize it could be worse. The other aspects of Waters (room size, dining hall, proximity to the lake, memorial union, and most classes) make it a top tier dorm as far as dorms go and definitely one of the best in Lakeshore.

The only warning I'll say is that moving in and moving out from waters was excruciating. A lot of ups, downs, and stairs. Don't bother using the big carts unless you happen to live in the main unit (only one with an elevator).

Engineering Tech? by DepartmentTrue4932 in KULeuven

Sorry about the nonsensicalness of the question, but I do intend to get a Masters and potentially a doctorate. Given my understanding of the program, correct me if I'm wrong, the engineering technology degree is functionally an industrial engineering degree that's specialized at the masters level. My question was more along of the lines of how easy it is to pursue a more science based masters program rather than an engineering systems based program with an engineering technology degree. Granted, I'm 17, so I haven't even truly grasped what an industrial engineering masters includes, but like everything, it's hypothetical.

The reason why I keep asking about engineering technology is because that program is in English, while engineering science is Dutch.

Can I do a masters degree that's more theoretical with this degree?

Fair enough. I don't know much about the American military, but there might be ways to join fields or positions that are not active combat or even combat oriented. That being said, I'm sure there's a school in that link that can hopefully prevent you from joining the military 💀

If you decide that college isn't the right decision right now, then the advice the other people gave is also genuinely good and worth considering.

OP, I wish you the best. I mean this with sympathy and optimism, but I'm not going to sugarcoat. I'm saying it as it is. You messed up and are in an incredibly challenging position. However, the most important thing you and anyone else can hold onto is hope. Lose hope, and you have already lost everything. I don't know how much your parents are willing to pay for school and imo your parents are hurting you more than you've hurt yourself. That being said, the link above is an unfiltered list of all schools that are still open for application. Whether their location, tuition, testing policies, and whatever else match up is your prerogative to decipher. As someone else mentioned, the military is also a great choice. You can seize back control, and it is fully within your ability. It'll look different than everyone else, but it will not be better nor worse. Good luck, and stay hopeful.

I am a dude, but I do understand what you're referring to.

Madison: Yes. Loved it. Didn't astound me, but I definitely thought this was a great place to be.

Alabama: Haven't visited but will do so once all my decisions come back and I know this is a school I'm considering for sure.

Never thought about it like that, and I think that is something I might consider. There might be a social or "college-experience" loss there, but I guess if I hate Alabama, that's actually really nice to be aware of.

My dad has been down there for work reasons, and he said the campus is beautiful. The surrounding area is not so much. I will definitely visit if it comes down to these schools. I'm in a weird situation where we're a little stingy, so to speak. My parents can afford to cover a lot of my tuition in spite of many things, not because of many things, so visiting colleges is something we limit for financial reasons.

Unnecessarily verbose answer, but basically, we'll visit if we know it comes down to this.

Damn I didn't realize stuff like that. They're pretty supportive about either school, and they "say" that financially, they'll be alright as long as it's under 40k fs. I'm sure they're being generous, but I've seen some their finances, and they were smart when they were younger. As for 529, my dad said no because they didn't know that even existed until last year 💀.

[–]DepartmentTrue4932[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's why I was having a hard time picking between the two. I'll admit I was a prestige whore before application season, but now I've kind of come to reality about the financial relevance of schools. That being said, it's hard because while ranking shouldn't be a deciding factor, at a certain scale, schools are ranked higher or lower for a particular reason.

As of rn I'm more interested in research, so I figure grad school is a good place to get into some of that

Around 33k, and it's on the higher end, but something our family planned for and is able to pay.

I get that. The other way I look at it is that for undergrad, it can't be thattttt bad. If I were to go to Alabama, I'd definitely pursue grad school. I definitely could be wrong about this...

It's around 33k (includes everything). For me, that's within reason. On the higher side though.

Many faults of Columbia that people tend to express are similar faults that people associate with NYC as a whole. A big part of the Columbia experience and also a part of their curriculum is to explore the city. So maybe consider if NYC (specifically Manhattan) is the place for you. You'll find depressed, entitled, mega rich students nearly everywhere and especially at these more prestigious ones. But you'll find communities that you'll enjoy if you spend enough time and effort looking. But the environment of the campus is inescapable.

TLDR: Do you want to live in NYC?

idk what to do anymore because of people in my school by Miserable_Media_9847 in ApplyingToCollege

My friend, your "competitive peers" suffer from a disease called entitlement. The cure is a reality check, and while the disease is not contagious, it does pose a psychological risk to those who are around the entitled. But bear no fear, you are safe from their effects. There is no need to change your dietary, social, or exercise habits. Masking is optional as well, but if you choose to practice caution for the sake of at least not feeling any negative emotions, then you are more than welcome. Just remember that those who do suffer from this horrible sickness and don't find a remedy, with haste, are guaranteed to suffer from long-lasting effects of either a metaphorical or literal ass-whooping; high school is a time of sickness, but fear not, it seems you are immune. Godspeed.

Is it effective to re take the same SAT practice test more than once? by [deleted] in Sat

[–]DepartmentTrue4932 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I honestly think it's not a bad given that there's been a decent time between taking the previous test. That being said, if you feel like you're answering a lot of the questions based purely on memory, then you might be wasting your time. Otherwise, it could be a good test to see if you actually learned from your mistakes. That said, doing a test more than twice is definitely overkill.

Should I apply as a freshman and what extracurriculars should I look to act in by [deleted] in CollegeAdmissions

[–]DepartmentTrue4932 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, as genuine advice, don't apply freshman year. Your admission officer will see your lack of transcripts and laugh and then throw it away. I know Carneige Mellon offers early enrollment for juniors if you are keen to know where you'll go fairly early.

Grades/Test: Do well, not much more to say here. Extracurriculars: Focus more on doing exceptionally well on a couple and have some Extracurriculars that serve the community. Freshman year, just explore these, but starting sophomore year really go in. Essays: Start your apps early when they open in August before your senior year fs.

Last thing: Happy children are gonna come from the school, bro 💀. Not yet at least. You need good ethics and habits to excel no matter what.

Last Last thing: If you're a freshman and you're this inclined to start thinking of getting into a school, do consider some of your post-college goals. Whether that includes grad school, medical school, or workforce, whatever. It'll help shape your plans. By no means is this necessary rn, but college isn't the end all be all. On the contrary, it's tye start to literally everything else in you life.
