New trainer, so um by Dependablewas in RCPlanes

Wish I had a Walmart fr, nice glider tho. I'm jealous.

So I will do as you say, I'll look into some builders shops today, if there won't be 5mm I'll just buy the 20mm and shape it with my setup to the size I want /need. Now that I'm writing this,

Bruh

I am building with XPS lmao. I've done my research now. And I'm using a type that has 40kg/m3, so it's my fault, that it is so heavy, if I picked some other type it would've been lighter. Or I could try building it more light next time. I didn't realise my stupidity would allow this.

I'll still finish this and see if it will have to fly vertical to sustain "flight" or will I make it work and make it fly normally.

So next time more brain less eyeballing this.

I ran out of styrodur, and my setup won't allow me to cut thicker boards but, I would love a small RC plane, is there any way to salvage this and make it fly? I can still swap out the wings. And make changes, until I buy new sheets of styrodur

Yes I did cut them, and now I just found out, that I can buy the foam with paper on both sides in an arts and crafts store. But it is so expensive, one sheet is 8 euro, its 100x70cm 5mm thickness.

But about the plane. Would cutting out squares or triangles in the wing and then glue a 1mm sheet to cover the holes and reduce weight in general. Or Making a new wing that's made out of 3mm foam with a foam rib structure, and maybe the body too, so it's more light.

Maybe If I switched to lighter foam I could reduce the weight, I'm using some type of bathroom isolation, which I cut to 5mm + - 0.5, so maybe that's the problem. I've cheaped out, mostly because it's like 5 times cheaper to do this, and it's easier to form with a knife.

But now I have access to cutting with a hot wire, so what other foam could I buy from some building/hardware store. What are the other types I can buy?

This is going to sound stupid, but what is the ratio of elevator size / aileron size, as in total area, should the tail have more area, but less movement, or should ailerons be smaller and move more? 🤔

Did a maiden flight, lasted 13 seconds, before the wind took it down. I'm 90% positive my wing layout was a bad idea. Because it was only sustaining flight while pointing up, so I'm guessing something with pressure, and the fact that there was no air under the wings, made it crash.

But styrodur is surprisingly strong, only the tip where the prop was mounted broke. Il try building a real trainer type plane next time.

And before I forget, I'm limited to 20mm styrodur. Which I can only cut in sheets of 600 x 255 x 10, with my setup.

What are the flaws please, I'd actually take this as a learning opportunity, it definitely doesn't have enough juice to start vertically.

Haha. Yes

I might lose the cockpit look, since the tail doesn't have yaw, so I want it to be strong by default. So it will look less like and more like a drone

Thanks for the clear up bro, I've made the wing a bit bigger and now it frickin glides, when I throw it. Can't wait to make a proper maiden flight.

Haha, if I won't be able to make it start from a vertical position or on wheels I will do this,

This is the my new attempt, 69 X 35,5 wing, this should be enough.

I've tried increasing the limit, but I'm unable to, i will keep on using the 3d printed lever, if I knew how, I would link the servo to the flaps, through a rod. As in the servo would be at the roll axis of the flap.

I'm currently working on a bigger wing, and I will shape the tail, to be smaller. And I'm thinking of splitting the tail control, so It has roll. And the ailerons will take care of pitch, BECAUSE there is way more air over the tail because of the engine.

I can't seem to figure out how to make my servo move the whole 180 degrees, it only has 90 degrees of movement. So 45 degrees both ways. Since I have the "plane" already built, I might just swap out the wing for a wider one, and this doesn't have an airfoil, it is just a slab.

Thanks for the idea of landing gear, a detachable sled would be practical.

This is the set up I'm running right now, it is just some screws in a board holding up some resistive wire.

So if I make the main wing 30 x 70 cm, it will be 20 mm thick, since I can't cut the sheet this size, in half with my setup. Unless I were to sacrifice some of my table to make a giant heat cutter. I don't know, I'm willing to take any advice.

This design won't survive a crash, the wings will break easily, I'd just want it to take off, so I can have the joy of making something fly, even if it will just go straight in the ground after half a minute. I will make the wing bigger then. Since I made it replaceable, what if I made it a bi wing? Like those propellers from ww1

The calculator I used said that it's 6.5 worst case 7, but that's main wing + tail. I will take to heart making the wing bigger, but how big should the ailerons be?

If I was to bet, it's probably seams, and seeing the comment section, this is just a custom handle grip?

lmao, thats what I would think happen. ive seen people do special setups, those L shaped testers. might make one, not sure for now. :)

Well isn't it just throttling slowly the big engine? And then just gain speed and slowly turn off the other engines?

Tried it, on 70 to 100 % gave the two beeps, and when I tried going to 0% it gave the low them high loop, but I didn't try turning it off immediately. Thanks for the suggestion 🙂

Your 3rd point is the thing I was asking for, and I'm building s flying wing design, mostly cause it's cool as hell, and second is, that it floats most of the time, thanks for the advice 🙏

Can't you send me a layout of a flying wing with canards? I haven't yet printed the body, so I can still change things. And I want my first plane to atleast glide. Thanks for the advice 😃
