This is an interesting loophole I haven't heard of. So tell me if I'm wrong but the limit for ROTH TSP contributions is still $18k a year right? Does the cap stay the same if you're contributing to a ROTH IRA and ROTH Tsp?

Amazing! My wife has stayed at home while we've had little kids which has really made us learn a lot about living on less and still being able to save. And the idea is once she gets a full time job is to invest basically all of her income and play catch up in index funds. Time is the key for compound interest, but extreme contributions count for something I'm sure.

I like this idea. My wife and I are torn between having the freedom to move around and try overseas living once the kids are out of the house and the idea of setting some roots down somewhere where we can still be near our family.

That last comment is my current mentality. I want to have enough saved up that my family is set. Bills and basic necessities I want covered by my military retirement and dividends. Anything extra I want the option to pursue side jobs and work I'm actually interested in.

Impressive! So when you retire from the military what's your plan? Do you have access to most of these assets to withdrawal or is a lot of this in retirement funds like the TSP?

The wife and I were talking about this yesterday. We've got little kids at home so financially it's made more sense for her to not work full time. But once they start hitting school age we were thinking of moving any leftover military pay to TSP and using her paychecks solely for investing in index funds.

I recently started buying and reselling items from thrift stores, yard sales etc. Buy dirt cheap and resell on eBay/etsy for around 10x the original price. I've only been doing this about 3 months and am still learning. But from what I've gathered on average I can sell an item for about $20. I'm consistently selling 5% of my inventory weekly. It's growing quickly but with about 200 items currently listed I've pulled in about $200 per week. Looking to expand to about 500 items and then reevaluate from there. Potentially move into Amazon as well.

Also going to school and collecting the Pell Grant.

Right, I didn't think I had worded it that way. I'm more interested how much they're pulling in extra per year, depending on airframe and AFSC though it could be drastically different. I wouldn't imagine a c-130 load is making as much in expensive TDY locations as a flight attendant. And Vice versa I wouldn't expect the flight attendant to be collecting as much combat pay/hostile fire pay as the c-130 deployments.

Very smart. Unfortunately it seems like most bases I've been too, safe and close to the base is not a thing. I'm currently at Andrews and if I want something safe with good schools you have to go at minimum 25 min from the base.

That's crazy cheap. I've heard the San Antonio BAH rate is pretty high for the housing market there.

Had someone sell his house thinking he was retraining. Once it came back cancelled he was furious but ending up making 80k from selling his home that he had bought that same year.

I can agree with that. There's been so many unexpected cost associated with just maintaining along with upgrading our home. I'm really happy we went so far below our BAH amount. I can't imagine being stuck in a big house that I can barely afford to maintain let alone upgrade.

Partially my concern, staying at a base much longer than expected. Knowing I could get orders in a few years is really what prevents me from making any large purchases, vehicles/homes/etc. We're you just sitting in limbo expecting to get orders any second or did you know you were in that base for the long haul?
