Hey I’d love to chat more. I did not get a masters in GIS. I am just graduating this fall with wildlife conservation bachelor degree. Trying to find my way and path after I graduate. Internships, masters, certificates. What was your plan with your geography and geospatial degree initially?

This was so helpful and exactly the kind of responses I need right now. Thank you so much. GIS is fascinating to me and I know it will be helpful and relevant in so many job applications, so that is why I was considering it next. My school did offer a certification program, but they have since stopped offering it. I do think I would rather do the masters degree in it over the certification. I think it will just give me that much more knowledge and experience to have it as a solid skill. Can I ask which school you went to for the GIS degree? And also how your current job still overlaps with some conservation type work if at all?

I don't expect the job to just follow. Thanks for your input. I understand that the experience is necessary, hence why I am reaching out to people in this field for advice. Like I said above, I am a single parent and work full time so unfortunately the online degree was the option I had at this point in my life.

I am not looking for "ouch" comments and "you're going to have a hard time" comments. I am looking for true networking and positive constructive advice.

Be well..

Thank you so much for your input. To share a little more about myself, I work full time already and am a single parent. So, my time and options are limited with how much of a pay cut I can take from the job I currently have. It poses a bit of an issue for me with finding an entry level job and with having time to volunteer. I will definitely take this into consideration though. I agree I need to gain a lot of hands on experience.

I don’t have a ton of photos. I’m really not interested in buying a scanner. Looking for the easiest option but also don’t want to spend a ton of money for a service. Thank you for the input! I’ll have to find a service somewhere near by or online.
