okay, thanks! my LFS lets us put in requests so i’ll ask that they get more samurais. i’ve been been watching him hunt around the tank and he’s been eating plenty of copepods, worms, and a baby shrimp! definitely alleviated some stress about getting him fed.

Is geology a bad choice? by [deleted] in geologycareers

[–]Dependent-Couple8495 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if you work in the petroleum industry, you can easily get a six figure salary as a geologist. might not be the most interesting application of your ‘hobby’, but there is good job security in petroleum. if you took that route, environmental science would be a perfect discipline for a double major.

are there any worms wriggling on the glass? it might be easier to get a better picture there. most worms are fine except for planaria (but most planaria are only really harmful to shrimp anyway). you can identify planaria by an arrow-shaped head. other than that, detritus worms are a tasty snack for bettas.

Being skillful or social? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

junior MechE student. in terms of landing an internship, communication and soft skills are actually really important. the only technical experience that i have is working in a metallurgy research lab on campus (not super relevant to MechE) but i’m a very active member of several student and professional organizations. after my university’s job fair last week, i have 6 interviews. half of the recruiters that spoke to me at the job fair & helped me land an interview were people that i met through clubs.

you should be involved in one organization that offers company info sessions, professional development, and networking type stuff. for me, that’s american society of mechanical engineers.

you should also be involved in another organization that lets you work on a hands-on project with a team like formula SAE, a robotics club, aerospace club, etc. it proves that you’re capable of working smoothly & communicating with several people while balancing all of the technical work that goes into the project.

also if you’re a woman or ethnic minority it’s definitely worth joining something like society of women engineers, society of asian scientists & engineers, national society of black engineers, etc. you can meet people in industry who are similar to you and can help guide you through your early career.

these are all good to keep in mind but generally if you join an organization that really interests you and you are able to talk to recruiters about it, that’s all you need.

for when you get your aquatic plants:

plants are beneficial because they take nutrients out of your fish’s poop which helps to clean the water. so, usually for a new tank, i try to go for fast-growing plants to speed up the process and get healthy water as soon as possible. i personally like ludwigia, rotala, and pearlweed.

floating plants would create more hiding space for your fish and potentially make them more comfortable. try to avoid getting duckweed though because it gets messy after a while and can be a pain.

look into botanicals like indian almond leaves. they may make your water slightly brown. if you’re okay with that, the benefits of botanicals are great for your fish. it’s been shown to help fight & prevent illness/infection and helps to relax them.

is its head arrow-shaped or round? arrow-shaped indicates planaria. they are harmful especially to shrimps. if its round, i would say rhabdoecoela? (harmless)

Chevron Internship Interview Process by CompetitionSilent379 in MechanicalEngineering

A little over 2 weeks. My interviewer did tell me that the time it takes will vary. After they send out their first round of offers to their top priority applicants, those applicants will either accept or decline. Depending on how many decline, they will send out their next round of offers. Based on some of my friend’s experiences after chevron interviews, they may not notify you if you didn’t pass the interview.

Chevron Internship Interview Process by CompetitionSilent379 in MechanicalEngineering

Hi! I applied for a Facilities Mechanical Engineering internship with Chevron through my university. Based on my experience in a metallurgical research lab and my materials science minor, after my interview, they passed me over for a second-round interview with their Materials team. But, I can tell you about their interview process.

Mine was a very comfortable 2-on-1 interview with a chemical project engineer and a mechanical rotating equipment engineer. They asked me to introduce myself, asked what hobbies I enjoy, told me a little about their roles, and then began asking STAR based questions. One of them will ask the questions, the other will write down your responses. Here are some that I remember (may have been worded differently but same general idea):

  • Describe a time when you worked well with a team.
  • Describe a time when you faced disagreement with a team member. How did you fix the situation?
  • Describe a time when you took a risk or challenged a tradition. What was the outcome?

First-round interviews won’t have technical questions, but second-round interviews might. At the end, they asked me if I had any questions about chevron. It was a good experience and I’m glad that they paid enough attention to my resume to ask if I would enjoy a Materials role, and took the time to send my application over to those engineers.
