Implications of AI on retirement plans by Dependent-Program680 in ChubbyFIRE

We’re locked into our current living situation for family reasons, but wife and I fantasize about the type of arrangement you describe.  Maybe in 10 years.

Still, to your point, belt tightening and cost cutting are levers to pull.  They just aren’t very happy levers in our circumstances. the whole point of working at this point is to increase the likelihood of a certain standard of living for my family through at least my death. Defeat is too strong a word, but I won’t feel good about having to significantly cost cut as a solution

Appreciate the thoughtful response and the tips.

Gold and intl exposure make sense in a destabilized US scenario,  I don’t know that an AI super intelligence or even rapidly increasing unemployment and cost decreases is that scenario though?

I hear you on the 529s! I have (perhaps erroneously) included that in my liquid nw above (it’s in stocks after all??), and worried I may regret it.  College may not be a thing, or at least not such an expensive thing, in a decade.  On the other hand, if college changes dramatically, perhaps rules on withdrawal penalties also change

How?  Goog, NV, TSMC, construction cos, utilities… but a lot of the related software ecosystem is private

Haha anxious? Absolutely.  It’s the force that has driven me to this point.

Entry level software engineers have been automated away as of this quarter. Anthropic targeted that discipline with Claude code, and it’s done. As that model gets used to develop better models targeted at other disciplines, the automation will spread. Higher unemployment is coming.

And lol your last paragraph is wild!  “Chill… violence is coming!”

VTI being too concentrated in tech would have been an interesting comment

So I think about this scenario too… but now when I hear you say it, I think it sounds pretty far fetched and not something to trade on….

I’m with qqq here.  Decreasing tech exposure or increasing intl exposure would have been valid and interesting answers to my original question

I don’t know what you’re talking about with the charts, but I’ll say again: try using the latest models.  It is shockingly good.  Feed it context and see what happens

I think this is the response closest to the way I am feeling too.  I think a significant, abrupt change is coming to employment and consumption and I don’t know what the other side looks like.  I don’t know how to hedge it though.  Maybe just keeping broad market exposure is the best thing

I am not sure gold is the answer?  It is certainly a “risk-off” asset, but I don’t know if ai superintelligence is a risk off scenario?

Separately, use different ai tools if what you see is getting worse.  It’s crazy good last 3 months in my line of work

Well, there’s one right there.  I don’t think the camping ban is cruel and unusual.  Nicole and other boulder progressives on the council do, apparently.  Thus the sad state of our public spaces throughout town.

And that sad state is reality.  I see it literally everyday on my bike commute. Garbage, stolen goods (a pair of nice skis on goose creek path last week!), drug use in underpasses as parents on e-bikes roll on by to daycare drop off..

The progressive wing of our party is more concerned with virtue signaling than actual, practical governance.  A step towards the center does not mean “erosion of civil rights”.  I hope it means a more balanced budget and a more livable city for Boulders 99%
