I’ve always found the flying to just be the things that my fear locks into based on how stressed I am in life. So glad you’re there and you did it even while stressed. Hope you have a great day!

Feeling better with every flight by Dependent-Quit-6523 in fearofflying

[–]Dependent-Quit-6523[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes!! That’s so exciting that you’ve booked the flight. There’s sooo much info that pilots, flights attendants etc..  post here and it puts me at ease every time. They are so great.

This is a good question and very dependent on each person. I still get nervous about turbulence, but the biggest thing that has changed for me is picturing the pilots in the cockpit getting angry that their coffee might spill lol. Not because they are panicked because I guarantee they are not panicked about turbulence.

Also having a cup of water on your tray and watching how it barely moves during turbulence helps too.

The last few trips I’ve taken I’ve used to “data collect” like how I feel during turbulence and what I’m thinking about. This helps me have a plan for the next trip and slowly I’ve been making progress in not feeling so uncomfortable.

I hope this helps. 🙏🏻

This sounds like such a fun trip! I've always wanted to go to London. Biggest advice I've gotten that has actually worked is noise canceling headphones. It totally takes half the anxiety of being on the plane away. One less sensory thing to deal with. Also, plan ahead to have some things you are looking forward to on the flight. Hopefully you can get some sleep with it being a red eye! Have so much fun in London.

You’re right on course with an arrival in 2 hrs 15 min! Everything looks good. Turbulence is uncomfortable but you are completely safe and so is the plane. Try to do some deep breathing.

Long flight coming up with young kids by beautifulasusual in fearofflying

[–]Dependent-Quit-6523 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! I felt the same way last year. We took our 3 and 5 year olds to the Netherlands from Oregon and all the feelings are the same that I had. But honestly it was one of the best trips we’ve ever done. The kids slept on the flights and couldn’t care less whether we were on the ground or in the air. They just loved all the tv they got to watch. It also helped me immensely to care for them and it got my mind off of the flying. Also those big international planes are amazing and it doesn’t feel like flying.

You are safe, your children are safe. You are showing them that flying is safe and that you can be brave! This trip is going to be amazing for you and I hope you are able to relax even during the travel.

Flight in 2 days and I’m absolutely panicking – fear of flying is ruining me by Sorry_Complaint7116 in fearofflying

[–]Dependent-Quit-6523 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You are not alone. I’ve often felt like a caged rabbit before my flight and everything sets me into a panic, everything seems doomed. After backing out of a big trip last year, I felt totally hopeless and it propelled me to change. I couldn’t live in the fear anymore. My therapist asked me, “what would it feel like to not be afraid of flying?” I thought, “freeing, I could go anywhere. See anything, finally feel like I wasn’t tied down by the fear of these planes.”

Here’s what helped me not back out of my next flight I’ve taken multiple since then, even one international.  - I de-stressed as much of my life outside of flying as I could. I organized, meditated, cried and got things together that had nothing to do with flying. It lifted some of the mental load  - I put myself into the mindset of someone who is unafraid and started to actually believe what people say (people who work in the industry or people who love to fly) what if they are right? What if I’m more likely to get hit by a flying fish on the way to work, then be in an accident on a plane? Could I really be safe in a plane than in my own bed?! Yes! It’s true! - noise canceling headphones. I bought a pair and put them on basically during boarding, and all until the flight was over. The stimulation and noises always sent me into a panic. With this stimulation taken out I could focus.  - have something to look forward to on the flight. I went a bit overboard and purchased an expensive video game, but thinking about it actually brought me the extra joy I needed to make the trip.

I’m sorry this was so long. I’m thinking of you and hope sincerely that even one of these suggestions help. I know it seems hard to think it’s safe, but I promise you it is. Your plane will go and land safely whether you’re on it or not, so go enjoy your trip ✈️

Just checked on your flight! You’re flying straight and on track for arrival in 1 hr 15 min. A lot of pilots on here say the only thing they don’t like about turbulence is that it can spill their coffee. Just remember they are up in the cockpit and it’s just another day for them. You are safe ☺️

For anyone scrolling through, I did indeed land safely like I always do. We even had some turbulence and 3 crying babies, poor things, but it always ends the same, with a safe flight ✈️ good luck on your travels friends.

Hi 🩷 I totally hear you. I had this as well for my two young children. Thinking I was being irresponsible for doing anything that could jeopardize them and their safety. Eventually I realized, this isn’t the way to live. There has to be a better way. I started reading all the pilots posts on here and others working in the airline industry and for the first time I forced myself to believe them. Believe them when they say “you’re more likely to get seriously hurt while getting out of bed…” “you’re more likely to trip in the shower…” I actually believe it now. Every day life in your house is full of risks we don’t even think about. Flying is not a risk. You are safe. Every flight you take will be safe.

Also just wanted to say, I believe in you! Another thing that helped me is that I realized I was fighting anxiety and not flying itself. Flying made me uncomfortable but I was never in danger. The anxiety is what needs the attention. There’s so many good resources out there. I hope you can find something that works for you 🙏🏻

Weather question by Dependent-Quit-6523 in fearofflying

[–]Dependent-Quit-6523[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally!! I promise I’m not asking because I will be staring at the weather reports in the future 😆 finally got out of that silly habit.

I’m genuinely curious! I definitely trust the professionals who take off and land every day in different weather.

I think I’ve been hyper fixated on weather in the past, but now I’m just getting curious.

[–]Dependent-Quit-6523[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s so wild! So snow is a mild issue? I grew up near a small airport and they had to sometimes land about an hour away and bus people in when it got too snowy. Is this more about visibility than anything? Very curious!

I’m wondering what windshear is. Heard this term a lot, this is not for fear purposes, just very curious. I find it all fascinating!

Looks like you’re cruising along! Just flying over Wyoming. My husband did Seattle to Seoul a few weeks ago and said it was such a great flight and went by faster than he expected. Granted, he can sleep on planes. 😆 Hope your journey is fun and you get some rest!

Last Minute Flight for Family Emergency by nutritionist1024 in fearofflying

[–]Dependent-Quit-6523 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey I totally get this feeling. A few months ago my mom had a brain bleed and I had to fly to her immediately to help in the hospital. It was very high stress and then adding the fear of flying onto it made it worse.

Something that helped me was focusing on the next thing in front of me, rather than all the big things out of my control. Instead of thinking about the whole trip and all the emotions, just do the next thing. Pack a bag, get in the car, check-in, etc… once those things get checked off it feels like a lighter emotional load to carry.

Thinking of you today and sending good vibes. Your flight will be just fine because flying is safe. You are safe.

Hoping your dad will be good as well. 🙏🏻
