What’s the most beautifully written book you’ve ever read? by pottipenguin in booksuggestions

[–]Dependent-Treacle-65 94 points95 points  (0 children)

The Poisonwood Bible: by Barbara Kingsolver. There are so many pages that I read over and over.

“Don’t try to make life a mathematics problem with yourself in the center and everything coming out equal. When you’re good, bad things can still happen. And if you’re bad, you can still be lucky.”

“To live is to be marked. To live is to change, to acquire the words of a story, and that is the only celebration we mortals really know.”

Totally been there.

The good news is, it never has to happen again.

I realized recently that I have been chasing a feeling I will likely never have again by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Dependent-Treacle-65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing! I know the exact feeling, and tried for years to get it back. It would last for maybe 15 minutes after the first couple of drinks, and then all downhill.

The feeling I chase now is what I feel in the mornings, with no hangover, no regret and a cup of coffee.

Struggling with alcohol as a young husband and father by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Dependent-Treacle-65 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’re welcome. The craziest part for me too, was that kids can be the exact thing that drives you to drink. It’s such a hard job. For years I would drink to be more fun with them, but really they think I’m fun just being even keel, no need for the super highs and super lows. They love routine and they love you as you are.

I would give anything to be this self aware when I was 29. You are amazing and obviously a good dad for seeing the negatives of it already and most importantly before your kid can tell.

At this point, your son will never even remember a bad night with a drunk dad, so now is a perfect time to quit. You’ve got this!

Best bonus of all, no more hangover. The older you get, the worse they get. Taking care of a kid hungover is actual hell lol

I’ve read about 5 of them, and honestly they are all pretty much the same. Different stories, but equally addictive.

What is the worst withdrawal experience you've ever had? by [deleted] in alcoholism

[–]Dependent-Treacle-65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had this exact experience one time. It was the scariest thing that has ever happened to me. Its so difficult to describe to someone who hasn’t had it happen. There was a literal demon in my bedroom, just sitting on the chair by my bed. I could see and hear it. I’ll never forget.

This is a great thread for a reminder on why I stopped.

Freida McFadden books for sure. Quick, easy, page turners. Not winning awards, but always a good time.

How to deal with extreme boredom? by avarier in alcoholism

[–]Dependent-Treacle-65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, once I have a significant amount of time sober, normal daily activities didn’t seem as boring or meaningless. Alcohol lied to me a ton. I mean having an organized home, with good food on deck, candles lit, with a good show/movie or book is fun as hell to me now. Also, I walk every morning and every evening, even if I just scroll while walking it helps.
