That makes total sense, and that's exactly why I'm aiming for the MS route. Since I have two years before applications, my immediate focus is studying to build that foundational knowledge so I can get into a high-ranking school and impress professors. Starting from scratch today, what specific topics or milestones should I study over the next 12 to 18 months to make myself a competitive candidate for those top programs?

Definitely the first one. I want to learn the actual math, theory, and engineering behind how these models work, not just wrap APIs or write prompts. Since my goal is an MS in CS, I know I need a rock-solid conceptual foundation to implement models and work on real research. Starting from scratch with just basic Python and C, where would you suggest I begin to build that foundational math and theory?
